Prime Minister Hun Sen has brushed aside a rumour that the government would lock down Phnom Penh and impose a travel ban to stem the COVID-19 pandemic. In a Facebook post today, Mr Hun Sen said, “Recently, a handful of bad people have spread rumours that the government would lock down Phnom Penh and ban interprovincial travels. On behalf of the of the government, I want to stress that no lockdown would be imposed in the capital, in a province or any part of the country.”

“Unfortunate propaganda by a group of bad people is aimed at plunging the country into turmoil, causing goods price to go up while the people would not live peacefully. They want to gain political benefits,” he said. On Monday, Mr Hun Sen also refrained from calling for a state of emergency to contain the spread of COVID-19 following the November 3 visit of the Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó who tested positive for the virus.
