Moderna claims 94% efficiency for its COVID-vaccine

Moderna just published data claiming that their vaccine candidate has an efficiency of ca 94% based on 95 persons infected. In contrast to the BionTech-Pfizer vaccine that requires deep cold storage/transport (-70 to -80oC), the Moderna product can be kept at -20oC for six months and after thawing can then be kept at 2-8oC for thirty days https://www.ft.com/content/9d7a2e24-aea0-4c45-82ab-509dc80ed5a1.

So. published (preliminary) efficiency data for various candidate vaccines:

BionTech-Pfizer     90%

Sputnik V                92%

Moderna                 94.5%

Sounds good. Hope it's out soon and all the vaccinated people can start to freely move around  the world again on aircraft and not doing quarantines, while the anti-vax crowd can remain home watching TV.

Who can confirm the efficiency data objectively ?

Nobody can at the moment, you should realize that we are talking about very small numbers (i.e. 90 were infected in the placebo and 5 in the vaccine group) so statistically it does not mean much. Furthermore, data about, for instance, the age of the infected persons is lacking. Maybe it were mainly elderly persons that were not protected in the vaccine group?

Some of these vaccines were tested on a small population of less than 50.000 people.

The testing time of +/- is too short. It takes normally 7 to 10 years to create a vaccine for viruses of the same structure.

Side effects are not well published for risk groups.

Vaccines are not the answer to covid. They have major side effects that would probably kill most people who are at risk of dying from the virus, and are at least comparable or worse than getting the virus itself. Side effects include severe fever, headaches, and exhaustion for days. One trial participant even broke a tooth from shivering so much with a high fever. Participants recommend planning to stay in bed for 2 days after getting the booster shot.

There's no way this is going to work. 7.5 billion people each getting a covid vaccine that needs 2 shots one month apart, while planning to stay in bed for 2 days with major side effects, every 3-6 months forever.  Won't happen.

We need to find a way to live with the virus. That means governments should educate people about the risk factors and people who are at risk need to take precautions to protect themselves (including staying at home where necessary) while everyone who is not at risk goes back to living normally. Yes, that might be selfish of me because I'm not at risk, but it's even more selfish for people to make unhealthy lifestyle choices that put them at risk of the virus and early death while expecting the rest of the world to completely change their behavior.

Chills, fever and tiredness lasting less than a day in a small minority of recipients are clearly announced as possible side effects of this vaccine, and of many vaccines. The news item you quote recounts 5 people's experiences out of  20,000+ . Most people do not experience any side effects at all.

The side effects will neither kill you nor be worse than the disease.

While it may be factually correct in the trial, that does not mean it will be so when given to millions.

I think anyone that thinks about it will understand why the claim has been made so soon in development.

I am, and I tick all the boxes for fatality if I catch it, but I have no wish to live the way some want us all to. I'm not going to hide in my room for the rest of my life, however long it may be, and I'm not taking the vaccine when it's too soon to see what long term side effects it may have.

The article you linked to provides absolutely no support for your ridiculous statement that "They have major side effects that would probably kill most people who are at risk of dying from the virus, and are at least comparable or worse than getting the virus itself."

Stop making things up.

Yes, but that is how anti vaxx crowd work. It is sobering, that a sizable chunk of the population hold anti scientific, anti rational views, more akin to a superstitious medieval mindset. Watch out if these types ever get big enough to run a country, you can bet modern versions of witch dunking and the inquisition will follow. ????

While this is great news we have to be realistic that these numbers were obtained with people wearing masks and social distancing. I would think the efficacy rate will drop somewhat in an environment where people are behaving normally. On the plus side, the combination of masks, social distancing and these vaccines could get us back to normal fairly quickly.

You sound like you are an immune system denier with a conformist personality who never question anything.
