BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Public Health is working with 22 agencies to raise awareness of drug-resistant infections, to mark World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW).

Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, together with World Health Organization (WHO) Representative to Thailand, Dr. Daniel Kertesz, attended the opening of an event this week to promote WAAW.

The event was organized by the Ministry of Public Health and 22 agencies, including related government offices, associations and organizations, civil society networks and agencies for international development. The event is taking place worldwide from November 16 to 24, 2020.

It is aimed at raising awareness of antimicrobial resistance and promoting prudent use of antimicrobials in medical, veterinary and agricultural sectors, as well as by the general public.

Mr. Anutin said Prime Minister and Defense Minister, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, attaches importance to antimicrobial resistance, and joined world leaders in adopting the Political Declaration of the High-Level Meeting of the General Assembly on Antimicrobial Resistance in 2016.

As the chairman of the Group of 77 (G77), the Prime Minister has continued to support efforts to raise awareness and understanding of drug-resistant infections and antimicrobial resistance. Currently, at least 700,000 people die each year due to drug-resistant diseases. In Thailand, antibiotic resistance is estimated to cause some 38,000 deaths annually.

Related activities are being organized throughout the week. The Faculty of Veterinary Science of Chulalongkorn University is holding drawing and essay competitions to improve awareness of the use of antimicrobials in animals.

The competitions are taking place at the Small Animal Hospital from November 16 to 18. Thai Drug Watch, the Thai Health Promotion Foundation and network partners are holding workshops on making information on antimicrobial resistance accessible on digital platforms, and behavior associated with drug resistance.

So dear gentlemen of the Ministry of Public Health, and of these 22 agencies: How about starting to control and limit the (mis-)use of these huge masses of antibiotics used in the countries shrimp, chicken and pork farming?

Controlling the big monopolies of the food industry would help to improve the situation. But we all know, not much will happen to these well connected companies. The only thing that counts is their profit, and not the health of the people.
