Man killed by mob over stealing of bananas

A mob in Kandal province on Wednesday surrounded a man, attacking and killing him for allegedly stealing bananas from a farm. The mob violence took place at 2.30pm on Wednesday at a banana farm in Takhmao city’s Setbou commune.

 

Major Seng Bunly, Takhmao city penal police officer, identified the victim as Yeb Sokkrey, 32, a fisherman in Koh Along Chen commune. Maj Bunly said on Wednesday while Sokkrey was walking alone from a pond nearby a banana farm in Setbou commune, it was alerted there was a thief.

 

“After hearing a loud voice: thief, thief! about 40 villagers rushed out of their houses, surrounded the victim and began beating him until he died on the spot,” he said. Maj Bunly said upon receiving this information, police officers examined the man’s body and found that he sustained critical injuries to his head and body.

This happens a lot in Cambodia, and I can't help myself from thinking that the idiocy involved is enormous.
