rooster59
Pattaya: Tourists put off going because of fears of dangerous air quality Image: INN Thai media INN reported that the long weekend in Pattaya was much quieter than normal holidays. They said that tourists had been put off because of reports that particulate matter was in the air and that it was dangerous to visit. The beach area in both Pattaya and Jomtien were noticeably quieter, they said. Some tourists were paying respects to a monument and were admiring the view from the top of a hill, however. INN said large areas of Pattaya had been sweathed in a smaze that could be PM 2.5. This meant that visitors were wearing masks to keep out the tiny particles from their lungs. Thaivisa notes that pictures published by the media seemed to show quite a clear day. Popular Post johng
The air quality a couple of days ago was rather bad, today is better but still hazy, a bit of rain last night probably helped. 10 minutes ago, rooster59 said: admiring the view from the top of a hill errrm... (yes they took the crane off the top ) 16 minutes ago, rooster59 said: This meant that visitors were wearing masks to keep out the tiny particles from their lungs. Doubtful that the masks they where wearing kept those particles out. Still they try to avoid naming the culprit of this air pollution which is largely down to people burning things ie farmers burning their fields stop just that one thing and the problem would almost be solved.

fredob43
People seem to be missing the point. The Smog is just another nail in the coffin. Pattaya is closed down/dead so why would people go there. I would have thought that going on a trip was to enjoy oneself. Things like having a dip in the Clean waters, picnic on the sand, and do a bit of shopping and dinning. Well in my estimation Pattaya doesn't have any of those. Unless things have changed in the last month.
JusticeGB
PM 2.5 was over 80 on the 19th which is when people might have decided whether or not to have come to Pattaya. Today it's 24.

Air fresher and cleaner in Pattaya now than its been for many years. (no Chinese coaches/less traffic). 5

I was there a month ago and even the Dark side was 60% closed. That was a tad better than the beach side where 7/80% was closed, with for sale or rent signs adoring most places. An estimation but not far off the real thing. My point was who wants to go there. Because it has nothing to offer. You will still get the few, who would like to get out of BKK for the odd few days but they will soon disappear, and your left with a Dead city again. Try going for a ride down beach road (Or any other road for that matter) you will see it for yourself. Tip don't go when it's night time as the place is a black out. Popular Post champers
There may be less visitors from Bangkok this weekend because no political demos are planned for Bangkok till next Wednesday. That said, Terminal 21 has a food fair on this weekend and there were big queues to get into the parking areas this lunchtime. Paris and London floors for those who are interested in stuffing their face.

Not quite as many as before but still enough for their businesses to survive. Talking to the guy who has the London Grill on Soi Neurn Plub Wan and he reckoned that he hardly noticed the difference. 2

Glancing in, I didn't notice any unusual foods but it seemed many Thais were finding things pleasing to their palates anyway.

Reasonably busy, Pupen seafood restaurant was packed to the gunwales lunch time and evening. I could breathe and I woke up the next day so that's a win for me. Central Festival on Beach Road also have a food promo event going on; as well as plenty of food stalls set up opposite along the prom. Next Friday and Saturday will be busy for the fireworks shows.

bkk6060
There are no tour buses which usually take the blame so what is the reason? Automobiles obviously contribute. And where are farmers burning near Pattaya? Just asking as it is inconsistent some days are clear and beautiful then the next is not.

Emdog
Just checked AQI for Bangkok and Pattaya. Average for BKK about 15 pts higher than Pats. Rama IV is way high, fwiw "This meant that visitors were wearing masks to keep out the tiny particles from their lungs." Or maybe keeping masks on because of that virus thing going around... maybe don't believe gov numbers? Reporter might have asked the tourists rather than making assumptions....

Popular Post MaxiMaxi
I live in TH and no need quarantine, just was in Pattaya one month, air very good and fresh, beautiful clean city, roads and beaches, nice to swimming, crowded only on week-ends, otherwise nice relaxing, prices of food and rooms very cheap, 4,000 baht monthly rent for aircon room. Italian restaurant Cala la pasta with all day set menù for 199 baht... The Sailor cocktailbar with 60 baht each and membercard, after 5 one is free. It was a nice holiday there....and fun to travel nearby by motorbike: Wat Khaochichan, Nongnooch park, BanAmphur....etc etc....

There are plenty of restaurants available to eat at both in malls and regular ones on Walking Street, 2nd Road , Beach Road , ect. For shopping Central Marina, Central Festival, Terminal 21, Royal Garden , Mikes mall and many other shops along 2nd Road/Beach Road , ect. The beach is much less crowded and you can picnic on it or order food from nearby restaurants that are still open.
