About 900,000 university graduates are likely to be jobless

Almost a million Thai university graduates, including about 500,000 who are due to graduate next year, are likely to be unemployed, due to economic contraction as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Thanit Sorat, vice president of the Council of Thai Trade and Industrial Employers and Operators.

 

He predicts that the Thai labour market next year will remain fragile, due to high economic uncertainty caused by the pandemic, which will impact three groups of Thai labour, namely those already employed, those already jobless and those about to enter the job market.

 

Most vulnerable among those already employed are the 45-50 age group, who are likely to face early retirement, said Thanit, as he recommended that they learn new skills and look for alternative careers, in case they are laid off or forced to accept early retirement.

It's been around 450,000 for several years. With 1.79 million in undergraduate degree courses (Min of Education Statistics report for 2016) over an average of say 3.x years, that's about right.

It's not such a big number, half of them wouldn't have got a job, covid or not.

Offer them all a government job.

45-50 year olds should get new skills and alternative "careers".  Maybe a go go dancers.

In the civilized world, when the masses are unemployed, they take the streets.

Well, follow the PM's example...less academia and more arts & crafts...that ought to do it. Spend 4 years + for electronics (or the like) and get a job weaving baskets/Thai dance.

Seriously though probably not a lot different to what's happening elsewhere.

How many doctors, Lawyers, Physicists, etc. Or are we talking about those fake University programs, 3 week courses or so ...

the numbers might be right, but how the hell they pass the tests is beyond me, I have close friends at university age and they will be looking for any job that comes along as was the case last year and the year before that.

Probably correct, but without tourism to help the female gender find an income it is extra worrying this year/next.

Well with no job prospects what will they do ? Give Prayut a headache by joining all the other protesters. Next thing you know is that another 10 water tanks are on the way from China. I cannot see a happy ending to all of this mayhem. 

No worries, 711 is hiring. They've done very well during the pandemic and those are big money jobs. I've got a friend pulling in over 300 baht a day! ????

That covers just about the entire population, doesn't it? I was going to say that it doesn't include those who don't want to work, but they would come under category two.

How many graduates end up in 7/11 and in the gogo bars. Also they can put many of them in Homepro and Global hiding down the isles playing with their phones and picking their spots.

Judging by the amount of skills the English Majors have, most would not get a job anyway !

I fotgot, no need to import people from the surrounding countries to carry out building work. The out of work graduates can be put through further education to learn proper building skills, like brick laying and proper plastering (not just taping the joints which start to crack after a few months). I understand there are hundreds of thousands of imported workers, so these can be replaced with the graduates. Problem Solved.

I did hear once that 7 11 only employs graduates, and if true would help explain.

 

I've always said unless it's for a medical or engineering degree ( or similar ) most university degrees are, IMO, worthless. When I started work most jobs were trade qualified eg nursing, but have since been converted ( without good reason IMO ) to university required qualifications. IMO a huge backward step and not borne out in results of worker competence.

How many in Mathematics and Physical Sciences like Chemistry and Physics.  That and Computer Science is where the job security is.

Work in the convenience stores first and then hunt for a permanent job
