Like I said in the recent 'Thai music' post, I want to get a cd of the traditional Thai music that is played all the time in taxi's etcetera, and usually consists of a Thai female warbling along to an endless synthetic tune produced by a Yamaha or Casio keyboard and always with an accordion.

Because I couldn't play guitar as a teenager, I took up the accordion and have two of the buggers at home gathering dust in a relatives attic.

Anyway, I hear them all the time hear but in three years have NEVER seen one.

It would be nice if I could get hold of one again - maybe do a spot of busking when the subway opens! :o

A fellow did a similar thing near to where I live. He used to play in front of his cap. One day I went past and he had 2 caps??

I asked him why he had 2 caps, and he said "Oh, I was doing so well, I decided to open another branch"

I think you may be refering to MORLAM, sort of a variation on a similar music theme, I sometime tell friends part of it sounds sort of like Thai rap. If I am correct, the accordeon you're talking about is in fact a flute. Looks a bit like a pan flute, it's held with both hands and has two rows of flutes on each side, about 2 feet long.

The flute is called kan (gf pronounces kaaaan, rising tone)

Two morlam female singers I like are Jintara, (dzintala) and Rock Saderk (Lock Sadeuuurk)

Hope this helps..

re: accordions and busking...there are a limited number of ways to play 'Lady of Spain'...

plus the cops would come, take your change and move you along...a highly unprofitable way to spend an afternoon...

Pan Flute? I knew this girl in Pattaya that said she was good on a Skin Flute. They sure got some weired instruments in Thailand.nothing like this in the high country :D
