Plan to ban 10-wheel trucks from Bangkok streets shelved

A proposal to prohibit trucks with more than 10 wheels from running in Bangkok areas, in a bid to reduce PM2.5 air pollution, will be postponed indefinitely to avoid causing an impact on the industrial and transportation sectors.

The Metropolitan Police Bureau had earlier proposed to implement the rule from December 1-28.

“The police have discussed with related agencies, including the Department of Industrial Promotion, Pollution Control Department, the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Public Transport Association, and agreed to postpone the rule indefinitely,” Deputy National Police chief Pol General Damrongsak Kittipraphas said on Thursday.

“The members at the meeting were concerned that the rule could obstruct the operation of the industrial and transportation sectors that are starting to recover from the economic contraction,” he said. “Therefore, the related agencies promised to study the issue thoroughly as well as explore other options to prevent and reduce PM2.5 air pollution in Bangkok.”

Damrongsak added that from December 1, police nationwide would more stringently inspect and enforce the law against large vehicles that emit black smoke and are one of the causes of the air pollution problem.

“We will send officers to perform random checks at bus terminals and truck operation centres. The inspection will be recorded via video camera to ensure transparency of police work,” he added.

Just shows how brain dead the silly sods are, ban the BIG trucks, so companies would have just used a hell of a lot more smaller trucks, causing more pollution.

Finally somebody has seen sense and scrapped the brain dead idea.

if they hold off on doing anything for long enough then it will be rainy season again and we can all forget about it for a while, again.

Banning big lorries at peak hours makes sense because they belch out smoke waiting in traffic jams. The better solution is to test the exhaust pipes of all lorries, busses and pickups and ban them from the roads until they have been fixed. Sadly the brown envelope syndrome will undermine that solution.

His holiness the PM said last year that all vehicles emitting excessive pollution would be taken off the roads and scrapped... guess he forgot to notify the relovent departments...????

Guess there are no cars with dirty exhausts in Thailand.

I mainly see dirty smoke from lorries, pickups and buses. They use the roads more often. In the UK and most developed countries taxis have a 3 monthly check up like an MOT test which would pick up dirty exhaust pipes. Motorbike drivers who take their baffles out of their exhaust pipes are also a big problem.

crop burning is the majority of the pm problem not trucks.

Obviously, there were not enough " Rolling Coal " Pickup Trucks available.

That's the 5000 kg. Gorilla in the room that they are hoping people are stupid enough not to notice. 2.5 PM pollution is far worse in the north and north east.

I really do wish they'd think before speaking... we all knew it wouldn't happen as soon as they said it was being considered.

There's no crop burning where I live "unless you want to count a million or so BBQ's" it's similar in effect, but PM2.5 levels are high.. construction sites account for some, decrepit old buildings where concrete is falling off adds to some more... the rest are vehicles that are not running clean.

We talking about Bangkok and not the north

no need to ban them, charge them a 'pollution charge' to enter the city, or central area of the city, similar to congestion charges and similar initiatives in other major cities; many wont enter to avoid paying and if they want to come into the city income will be generated for air pollution initiatives

Brown these days? I remember little white envelopes for "Tea Money" which was large enough to buy the whole tea farm, that is why I pulled out of Thailand until now.

Here we go again .. free load revving the engine when the truck is stationery will not produce the same smoke output results as a laden truck labouring along .. that is when they emit the most .. and free rev' testing is easily defeated by placing an obstruction beneath the accelerator .. if they encouraged by way of incentivising hauliers to chop their smoky old clunkers in for the latest Euro 6 emission standards trucks which have been around for yrs then a lot of this headless chicken running around in flip flops wouldn't be necessary ..

are you really that obtuse ?

explain how the pm shoots up and down at certain times of the year in bkk with the same amount of bbqs and cars on a daily basis. you ever drive out kanchanaphisek rd ? all the way from near swampy past khlong luang there are farms and rice fields along the highway.

crop burning is everywhere in this entire region of the world. then there are these things called wind and weather patterns.

I guess they came to the realization of who actually owns and controls the transport industry and the financial implications to those involved!

That's what happens when you have poorly educated soldiers trying to run the country.

They need special inspectors not just cops, checking exhaust on tick over is as good as useless, pedal to the metal and it should clear when the diesel pump governors kick in. The old technology of placing a white board next to the exhaust used to work fine in the UK. And brakes here are never tested with a full load. Overloaded vehicles here are the main problem causing black smoke. 50yrs ago as part of my job i used to take trucks for testing on a regular basis in the UK.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I always thought that 10 wheel trucks were already banned from city streets during the hours of 6am to 10pm.
