Hinet - Ftp Preformance Worse Than Useless

Featured Replies

Two weeks ago I had a HiNet 2Mbit/2Mbit SDSL link installed as I do a lot of FTP. Having used it I have discovered that FTP download is atrocious - it frequently times out when trying to do a LIST or CDUP command or any other basic FTP function or often midway during a transfer.

The timeouts appear to be after 60 seconds of issuing an FTP command

Download speed is between 8 kbytes to 20 kbytes from servers in Holland , Uk and USA

However if you put the full URL of the file to download in a browser such as IE then I can get double or more download speed no timeouts

Upload speed on HiNet is acceptable but not what 2Mbit should really be like !!

If I use my TOT 512/256 ADSL link, which I thankfully kept - no timeouts - reliable FTP and fairly consistent throughput albeit slower upload speeds.

I have compiled a set of stats and given to CAT to try and get FTP sorted. I called it "CAT sheet" - pun intended

Anyone else suffering similar problems ?? Any solutions obtained from CAT ??

My systems are Windows XP - FTP s/w is Ipswitch WS FTP Pro and Router is Zyxel Prestige 792H

Pleased to get some feedback - as CAT seem quite disinterested.

I'm on the same 2M/2M plan with CAT/HINET and am in Koh Chang. I noticed it was terrible when using WSFTP, then gave SMARTFTP a try and for some reason it's far faster, though variable. A much nicer interface too.

Hi,

I have CAT Hinet too, the 2/2 Mb package. I am downloading daily at an average speed of over 130Kb/s (torrents,Emule, etc..) and uploading even faster, sometime over 200Kb/.

For FTP, I am using FileZilla, under Vista. I download yesterday 42Mb from a server in Europe in about 20mn (about 17Kb/s)

Regards.

Hmm.. the quality of this service appears to seriously fluctuate a lot depending on where you are. I'm in Bangkok (near Asoke intersection/skytrain) and the service works fine.

Thanks for the various observations, and I will give different software a try and see if it makes a difference. Although I have just paid for a new license for WSFTP Pro 2007

I am located in Phuket - Chalong

The annoying part is that it all seems to work Ok on TOT ADSL, and I have also used DOS FTP on both HiNet and TOT as a comparitive test.

On HiNet commands time out frequently and the FTP server disconnects. You can see the port open then time out after 60 seconds.

So it is either my router , which I somehow doubt, or CAT is "strangling" FTP traffic

PhuketFr : 17kb is what I get from time to time, but you would expect better for the amount CAT charge !!

Interested to see if CAT comes up with any answers. . .
