Thailand tourism return: Government told to "be brave" and open travel bubbles allowing Chinese tour groups

A collection of tourism businesses and organisations headed by the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce will be contacting Thailand's Covid-19 co-ordinating committee (CCSA) this week to press the government to establish travel bubbles with low risk countries, reported Thai Rath.

The move particularly relates to starting travel bubbles with twenty provinces in China.

Among the provinces they specifically mention Guangzhou that is ready to send Chinese tour groups to Thailand.

The CoC, hoteliers and other tourist organisations that will put their name to the letter want to see a pilot scheme set up between Guangzhou and Phuket.

The economic situation on the holiday island is seen as so dire and in imminent danger of complete collapse meaning that urgent help to revive tourism there is needed.

Narongsak Phutthaphrommongkhon, chief of the Thai Chinese Chamber of Commerce, said that operators in the tourism sector understand the need to stop infections and recognise Thailand has had a few cases in recent days.

But the country needs to think about the economy and appreciate the worldwide recognition it has for its Covid response and capabilities.

Narongsak asked the government to make a brave decision to introduce travel bubbles and start with the Phuket pilot.

As Thailand has lost its spot as the most popular cross-border destination for tourists from mainland China, according to a survey by HSBC Holdings Plc, as neighboring Japan and South Korea moved up the list.

so Thailand will have to really grovel and beg and offer freebees to the Chinese tourist to come here.. free seafood buffet and free massages comes to minds...

And its only early December.... Forget this high season, they're lucky if it ever gets back to "normal".

If they will come.  They have their own economic problems.  Thai military caters to them anyway.   This is hardly a surprise after the howling we have heard for the last 8 months.

Yes, tell them Generals to be brave...

Difference between being brave and stupid, but we can't ask powers that be to make that distinction as they have experience with neither.

Prayut won't do it he is waiting for the vaccine before opening the borders.

But a solution could be the total closure of Phuket with quarantine

What about Perth Australia ?  It has turned out to be the safest city in the world, If not very close to the top.  Planes would definitely be full and a much better class of tourist with money to spend. But as for all the paperwork and compulsory 2 weeks in hotel lockdown, I bet nobody would go.

No its a terrible place. Best advise to stay away from here. Please don't look at this week's weather forecast, and please don't Google our beaches and tourist attractions. Its all false. Not safe to fly here and too much paperwork. I hope your right and nobody comes here.

Don't forget to mention to these possible Chinese tour groups, 'all must strictly comply with 14 days quarantine and don't forget your $100,000 insurance..

Yet according to the wuhan leaks published 3 days ago:

"From the start of the outbreak to March 7, the total number of Covid 19 deaths in Wuhan/Hubei province was 86% of what internal documents show.

Reported publicly : 2986 deaths when it should have been 3456 deaths..."

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/11/30/asia/wuhan-china-covid-intl/index.html

While there is a manipulation it seems to be much less than we could have expected.

Moreover even if they had under reported 10 times the deaths, it would still be 10 times lower than what countries like the USA have nowdays.

While China can be blamed for several delays and coverups of the start of the pandemic, blaming a single country for failing to contain an emerging virus which was not transmissible to humans before does not help with anything, especially seeing the lack of leadership in other countries which had 2 or 3 months to prepare and managed the situation even more poorly in the past 9 months  isn't exactly leading us anywhere. Taking responsability for your own actions on a state and individual basis (distanciation, masks, etc...) is the only valid way to deal with an epidemy, name calling and blaming has never helped. That does with COVID just like with HIV and every other type of pandemics our planet has been facing.

What the hell is 'brave' about risking your own citizens lives?

I have a couple from Perth right now would book my villa for one year, how much would they be spending around the area every month? Quite a lot and thats just one, Couple of Russian families dying to get back who have been guest of ours in the past and spend good money in the local communities

Nobody who lives in a country that requires 2 weeks of expensive quarantine to get back will be going on holiday until that quarantine requirement has ended.

China has a 2 week state supervised locked up around the clock quarantine on all international arrivals.

This applies not only to China but places like Aus/NZ - do they still have 2 week quarantine requirements?

Where they don't charge for this quarantine at the moment I expect this to change to discourage leisure travelers.

Suicide by greed. I was going to , you couldn't make it up. But someone has.

The Government is actually a bit smarter than some of the repliers on here.

For  Thailand to take any extra risks right now & end up with a huge amount of locals & Thais infected would spell doom in the long term for any sort of return to tourism numbers for up to 3 years as other countries would reap the rewards of vaccinated tourists

Swallow the bitter pill for another 7 months & next December could be looking brighter

Good idea.

The Chinese government will not allow its citizens to travel to Thailand because Thailand repeatedly shows it has not got control over corvid. We can only hope that the recent cross border revelations are not the flame that lights the blue touch paper ???? Why do I keep getting the suspicion that the non reporting is a delaying tactic for the top echelons to squirrel their money and themselves out of the country before the loss of control hits.

You mean increasing the freeway speed limit to 120 kph. Yes, I agree. As for Covid-19 look at the statistics and the vulnerable groups.
