Khon Kaen: Direct flights to and from Vietnam and Singapore in the offing

 

 

In an interview with local media the governor of Khon Kaen has intimated that direct flights between the north eastern Thai city and Vietnam and Singapore are a possibility. 

 

Such routes would help to promote the province and its hospitals in the area of medical tourism said governor Somsak Jangtrakun talking to Khon Kaen Link. 

 

This year the pandemic has affected tourism of all kinds in the province. From an expected total of 6 million visitors there are expected to be 2.8 million.

 

He said that his teams are promoting not just medical tourism but working on all sorts of events for the coming year to showcase the attractions of the province. 

 

In particular it is known as a place for seminars and meetings of both local and national importance. And right now for international seminars video conferencing can be used. 

 

As regards medical tourism when borders are opened again he is expecting renewed interest from people in Laos.

 

But the expansion of air routes internationally to places like Vietnam and Singapore will help to promote medical tourism to a far greater degree.

These routes, and others, have been touted as possibilities for Buriram Airport for some time now. 

 

If push came to shove, I would expect Buriram to be the chosen one. A powerful ex politician and now owner of the football team and the race track would play a big part.

Great news. When the new extension to Khon Kaen Airport is completed, such direct International flights will be a reality, not only Vietnam and Singapore but, when I worked as a Tourist Police Volunteer at the airport, destinations in Laos and China were also mooted.

I don't think 'Build it and they will come' applies to the international airline business right now. If the LCC's aren't talking about doing it, it's not happening.
