Police order tighter border controls; set to prosecute illegal returnees

BANGKOK (NNT) - A deputy national police chief has ordered related police units to impose more stringent border control measures to prevent illegal entry during the holidays, while urging officers to prosecute persons who have illegally returned from Myanmar, and brought the coronavirus with them.

A Royal Thai Police Deputy Commissioner General, Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittiprapas has signed a directive to the Immigration Police Bureau and the Border Patrol Police to enhance their regulations against illegal entry into the country across national borders.

The directive calls for more personnel to be mobilized at checkpoints, with more attention given to natural border crossings, especially in areas of concern in the northern and southern regions.

The deputy police chief has ordered officers to be on high alert during the New Year holidays, where the volume of people traveling may help facilitate illegal entry.

He has instructed police officers to prosecute persons with COVID-19 who have illegally returned to the country via natural borders, with charges ranging from violation of the Emergency Decree, violation of the Disease Control Act, and violation of the Immigration Act, through to concealment of information.

Provincial Police Region 5 will be pursuing cases against Thai women who illegally crossed the Thailand-Myanmar border to work despite the border closure, once they are fully recovered from the virus or have completed their quarantine with negative tests.

Police officers will be informing these women of the charges of illegal entry into the kingdom, and failure to comply with disease control protocols from the provincial communicable diseases committee.

Among the women, three of them have been admitted for treatment at Nakornping Hospital in Chiang Mai, with others in hospitals in Chiang Rai and Phayao.

So is he saying there were no stringent border control measures in place before ?

If that is the case then he (and his bosses) should be sacked for dereliction of duty

Well the police seem quite adept at "finding" laws to support charges. "Show me the man, and I'll show you the crime" seems to be the "rule of law" here.

I'd venture a guess that there must be quite a few regarding entering the country illegally? Plus posting pics on FB when doing so would be a "Computer Crime".

Build that wall!!

With such a large army, basically with nothing to do, I can't understand why they aren't fully deployed on border patrols at the present tome. The navy could be deployed on patrolling the border rivers too.

The cat is truly out of the bag and now they are still repeating and or deflecting the real problem, i.e. how far has it spread and what the f are they doing to contain it ?

Try these. I quote:

''violation of the Emergency Decree, violation of the Disease Control Act, and violation of the Immigration Act, through to concealment of information''.

It makes me wonder why you felt the need to ask.

I can only speak for border crossings between Thailand and Laos that I know about. There are international border crossings/gates and traditional border crossings, possibly what people call here "natural borders." The former are formal border crossings where international travelers and trade can cross using all the formal documentation. The traditional border crossings are for locals to facilitate people who live in or around the border and are completely off limits to international travelers. Other conditions apply too.

They have more than enough gunboats to cruise up and down the Mekong.

What the police need is another conference to discuss the situation and make plans.

Sounds like a fun place.

I've witnessed borders during war settings ... they have censors every hundred yards, backed up by a light security force behind them.

Covid and possibly bringing a virus into a country should be a war setting. The damage can be just as horrific (see USA, Europe, South America).

They were probably too busy crossing the border themselves to go gambling.
