How many dependants can I have?

Featured Replies

I've lived here since 2005 on a Work Extension, with my wife and son as my dependants.  I'm coming to the stage when I'm considering "retiring".  If I switch to a Retirement Extension, can both my wife and son be covered as well, as my dependants?  My son attends an International School, so he could possibly have his own Education Extension.

A extension of stay based upon working and retirement are both under the same clause of the immigration order for extensions based upon being a member your family.

Thanks.  So, I can just get a Retirement Extension (800,000 in the bank) and both my wife and son can be added to it as my dependants, like they are with my Work Extension?  That will be good.

Yes they can apply for extensions when you change to retirement. There is no difference.

A general enquiry as I'm not ever likely to be in the same position as the OP - but its related.

If you live in Thailand on whatever legal visa and your dependants (children - foreign) live with you, does there come an age where they have to leave?  If so, are there any circumstances under which they could stay?

It would be a little rough on a kid if they'd lived with their parents in Thailand since they were small (or even born) and had to leave - going to a country they've never known and possibly don't even have any relatives there.

I know that in the UK this is covered by a general rule that almost anyone who has lived in the UK for at least 5 years - legally, qualifies for citizenship providing they pass a few simple tests.

The age for children is 20 year old. After that they would have to get their own extension. If attending a school they could apply for a extension or it they found work that is a possibility.

There is no other options for them.

It's a long way off (14 years), but if my son couldn't get his own extension to stay in Thailand once he's 20, he'd have no option but to go to the UK, where he has no immediate family and has only visited for a few weeks in his entire life!  I guess it will be character building for him.

A lot can change in 14 years.

But after that long here he might be bi or tri lingual which could help him find work here.
