The majority of Thais have no plan to travel during the long weekends, a recent poll showed.

A Bangkok Poll survey by Bangkok University on “Thais’ travel plan during long weekends" found that more than half -- 54 per cent of respondents -- have no plan of travelling in December, while Chiang Mai is the most popular destination among travellers.

The poll, which surveyed 1,137 respondents nationwide and was released on Thursday, found that among the reasons for not travelling during long weekends were: Having to work/study (20 per cent), having financial restrictions (11.7 per cent), and having health problems (8.8 per cent). Some 25.2 per cent of respondents, however, said that they planned to travel during the long weekends in December, while 20.8 per cent said they were still uncertain.

Chiang Mai is the most popular destination among respondents (25 per cent), followed by Chiang Rai (9 per cent), Nan (6.6 per cent), Phetchabun (6.4 per cent) and Loei (5.1 per cent).

When asked about the government’s measure to stimulate tourism, 67.9 per cent of respondents said they were aware of the "Rao Pai Tiew Gun" (Let's travel together) campaign, while 32.1 per cent said they were not aware; 61.4 per cent of the respondents said they had not registered under the campaign, the main reasons being: Do not know how to use the app (18.5 per cent), the registration process is too complicated (15.5 per cent), the room reservation process is too complicated (3.5 per cent).

When asked about their opinion on the effectiveness of the government’s tourism stimulus campaigns, 55.2 per cent of respondents said that these measures were effective and would result in more people travelling, while 44.8 per cent said that they would have only a minor impact on the tourism industry.

For the love of God please stop it with these Thai extended holidays - my daughter never seems to be at school and needs some form of education.

  • These long weekends are just creating more debt for Thais. They have had them just about every month recently. Maybe many are just maxed out on their credit cards

  • This current long weekend is not a smart idea as there's some covid kicking around, if anything the gov should be advising people to stay home and do essential travel only, we may well see a big jump

This current long weekend is not a smart idea as there's some covid kicking around, if anything the gov should be advising people to stay home and do essential travel only, we may well see a big jump in covid case in the next 1-2 weeks due to people travelling around, especially people returning from Northern provinces, however, I certainly hope this isn't the case.

It never ceases to amaze me that countries suddenly give the whole nation the same day to go on holiday........or that people are prepared to endure that absolute chaos that ensues.....

Have extra holidays, but take them when you want.

I would rather sit in my apartment than my car or an airport departure lounge.

How can people afford to go away when incomes for many are non existent due to the tourist restrictions. One day tyey will have to ooen up and whilst many other countries will have gained 'herd immunity' Thailand will still be coping so insularly that infection will spread through aTyailand whilst other countries move about safely. Its all well and good to put  such restrictions on but I am sure itvwill come back and bite them on the b**.

No surprise there. Money is in short supply. I'm guessing those travelling are either doing family visits or relatively wealthy Thais who would normally go abroad.

Bought by rich ChiangMai people from poor broke Bangkokians.

Joke   in case anyone takes it seriously.  ????????

Absolutely agree. I walk past the local school every morning and it seems like a 50-50 chance they'll be any kids there.

So all the wealthy people from Bangkok are travelling to what is now Covid central for the long weekend.

Next week, they'll be telling all their friends in the coffee shops and nail salons of Krung Thep how wonderful the foggy mornings were, cough cough, excuse me, but ever since we came back I've had a throat irritation, cough cough, I'm sure it's nothing but I'm running a bit of a temperature too, I must have caught a cold being out with hundreds of others in the foggy, damp weather. I'm sure it's nothing, though, cough.

Been thousands of domestic tourists in Nan province for most of the last six weeks. My wife's homestay has been booked out from early November to 5 January.

Yes another cancellation at Ban Bung Bed and Breakfast in Chonburi.

Ridiculous every second week in Pattaya

Long weekends are waste of money.. Only for the rich people with all the benefits.. Why don't they approve the Civil union bill?? there would be a lot of weddings with will give more money to the ordinary people. And why don't they not create more jobs.. like cleaning rivers, canals etc People will work, earn money and spend it.. that is much better than holidays were nobody works or earns. In holidays money only move from one place to another, but doesn't bring more prosperity

Probably the easiest place to breath is at home.  How can the government expect anyone to go outside and enjoy when they cant see anything through the thick Haze of Cane burning.  Why isnt the media covering it?

It seems like the Thais take their holidays, the Chinese holidays, and our holidays. I think they like Christmas the best as they are always looking for presents.

And the article shows a photo of a beach... ????

Almost every hotel in Khao Ko is fully booked this weekend. Spending some time in Phetchabun this week to visit family.  Even in town hotels are full.

People only have so much money and I guess that many would just like to keep earning rather than have loads of holiday weekends. Long holidays by workers who are vital to the economy is a case of diminishing returns, that can only lead to less economic activity, not more.

We will be traveling to the south to escape the smog after the long weekend, spending our time indoors in the meanwhile. 2.5 PM levels have been mostly at "unhealthy" levels for the last three days. We have changed over to the N95 rated masks as the covid masks are offer very little protection against high level air pollution.

But you don't understand...who said that that Thailand should concentrate on less academia? Give everybody long holidays and you'll get less of everything on the curriculum, Ha!

Thank goodness for that. Can you imagine what it would be like if everyone went on holidays for the long weekend.

Agree it seems more time off of school than in school...  didn’t the semester just

start and holiday..and added holiday..  no time for Education

Not misleading. A misunderstanding.

Education is power and that is something not to be encouraged among the lower classes.

Wrong. WAS the likely most popular destination until travellers cancelled due to Covid fears.
