Smoking or growing cannabis in Thailand is still very much illegal

Thai media Bangkok Biz News urged Thais to "not misunderstand" the situation after marijuana and hemp products were removed from the list of level 5 narcotics.

Changes promoted recently by Thailand's health minister and DPM Anutin Charnvirakul came into effect yesterday.

But if people are thinking that means they can light up a joint or start growing in Thailand - think again.

In a briefing at the Food and Drug Administration yesterday secretary Dr Phaisan Dankhum explained some of the nitty gritty.

Only certain parts of the marijuana plant are legal - the buds and seeds are not, they are still illegal.

Smokers of the drug seek out the buds as they are high in THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) - the chemical that makes users "high".

Only a THF content of 2% is allowed according to the new law, explained Phaisan.

Allowed are leaves not connected to buds, and parts of the marijuana plant like stems and roots.

Buds of hemp plants are also illegal but the seeds of hemp are not.

In addition people who wish to grow the plant for medical use must have permission from the relevant authority.

  • Agree with you 100%. When I first came here in the late 1970s ganja was almost as easy to buy as beer. It was everywhere. You could find it in the cities, in the countryside, in the mountain

SMOKING CBD OIL? Is that not a bit like taking Heineken 0% intravenously?    LOL

And here's me thinking it was the THC content which was illegal, not the THF!   What about the CBD?

Well, the recent hemp "relaxations" limit CBD and THC to 0.2%

You can get CBD Oil from the GPO - that comes from government/university grown cannabis.

Cannabis will never, ever be legalized here.

Seeds come from flowers which are apparently illegal so how do you get a seed that is legal?Sounds like a conundrum.Growing cannabis is now legal in Thailand you just need to get permission and sort out what happens when your legally grown plants start to bud and flower. You can't just cut the buds off because they are already there and they are illegal so it's off to jail is it?No mention yet of male flowers and buds which have very little THC,about the same as leaves from my extensive experience.

If one obtains some GPO oil legally can I smoke it legally even though I won't get stoned?

Glad to see this story.

Many people have been posting incorrect information here about how MJ is legal or about to be legal or not a issue any longer.

Totally incorrect.  And comments to the contrary get a barrage of hate.

Nah, we're too busy blazing away watching cartoons and snacking. The anti- fun brigade are the ones to blame.

Buds and seeds will be legal by the end of next year to get those tourism numbers back up to 39M.

Agree with you 100%.

When I first came here in the late 1970s ganja was almost as easy to buy as beer.

It was everywhere. You could find it in the cities, in the countryside, in the mountains and on the islands.

Starting in the 1980s the War on Drugs brought in a nasty police state atmosphere along with a lot of badass dope like speed, coke, and designer drugs.  Not to mention mass-incarceration.

Any step towards ending the drug warrior mentality vis a vis cannabis is to be welcomed.

Marijuana is very beneficial if you are addicted to marijuana. For everyone else, not so much.

They think oh, this relaxes me, because they are addicted, they think oh,  this helps me sleep, because they are addicted, they think oh, this is such a useful plant because....

Imagine if everyone starts smoking weed everyday of their lives, starting as a teenager. Is that really the world you want to live in?

It seems you know well what you are taliking about, it s impressive!

Why would everyone start smoking weed every day as a teenager? You mean if weed brcomes legal, that s what will happen? Were you drunk when you wrote this?

Looks like they've made a right hash of that ..

So of the approximate 200 enlightened countries in the world, how many are not dinosaurs and have legalized the smoking of cannabis?

Most Alcoholics go off on Pot Smokers , it’s like some competition or there’s rivalry between them , Ridiculous, you always here from the alcoholics bashers  and Big Pharma pill droppers

I don’t think there’s any rivalry or competition. I’ve never been baked with my buds and talked about winos or pill poppers - we were too busy laughing at something funny on TV, talking, relaxing and being merry!

Some folks just don’t like seeing others happy.

There’s definitely a group of people that hate weed though.
Then again there’s always a group of people who hate another group of people. That’s just life. Sadly.

Whilst I will never understand their negative opinion on this plant, I’ll defend their right to hate it. Go ahead, be a party pooper, but I draw the line at them imposing their views on anyone else.

There are a plethora of legal substances that have been medically proven to be more dangerous than weed. Alcohol is one of them, and was made illegal in the US - just look at how prohibition turned out. Not very successful was it? That’s because a large majority of the population recognized it as enjoyable and harmless and did it anyway. For a small proportion of folks it’s a problem (some would claim it’s a disease) because although harmless in small quantities, repeated abuse of it is dangerous and lethal.

The same thing is now happening with weed. It’s so popular and pervasive in society because it’s universally recognized as harmless and enjoyable. Almost all modern day presidents of the USA have admitted to smoking it at some point - Barack Obama / George Bush (what didn’t he try...) / Bill Clinton. Some oldies too - The first president to the 5th all smoked.

In the UK there were 10 candidates vying for the prime minister job when Theresa May announced her intention to resign. 8 of them admitted to smoking it and some of them admitted to using opium and cocaine too!

Weed has been medically proven to be safe and not dangerous at all - if you’re an adult. It can have negative consequences on a developing, child brain. The same way that alcohol is dangerous for minors and is illegal to imbibe underage, so too is weed in states / countries that have legalized.

Legalization is happening everywhere. Slowly but surely, state by state, country by country. There is no going back now. Just like when prohibition came to an end for alcohol, so too is the vilification of weed.

Legalise, export, make up a little for the lack of tourist dollars.

See it happening sooner rather than later.

Taken orally.

Guess you could try to smoke it. Let us know how that works out for you.

I support 100% decriminalization (two separate laws here apply: Narcotics Act 2522 (1979) and the Psychotropic Substances Act 2518 (1975), both have severe penalties) and legalization but have no standing.

My State in the U.S. was one of the first few with both medical and recreational (incl. home grow), after we voted for it in a referendum. Society has not broken down there.

When I say "never", I mean in the next ~ 10 years. I should have been more clear.

it will be fully legalized within few years only.

it seems that you do not even know who decided the medical legalization ? it's not a small PM guy as most people who are not able to think beyond the headlines suppose...

Nothing worse then a pot head with a burned out brain driving a car.

There should be no weed allowed here.

I am still clueless as to what medical growers are allowed to grow exactly. Are they allowed to grow flowers or are they restricted to stalks and leaves also ? What strains can they grow ? Is it a Thai sativa with thc limits only ? Too many questions and the last 2 years worth of press releases have just been back tracking on the original announcement of cannabis for all. With the article before this one I have pretty much given up on legalization in the near future because they seem to be even confused about what cannabis/marijuana is as all they have done is legalize hemp ( I am not even sure if this is medical only)

Proud to be talking about what you know nothing ?

I won't even try to explain ! if people like you still don't get it in 2020, this is hopeless, we just need to wait that people like you are old enough to die, then the world will be cleaner with people who understand it.
