No truth to reports Thailand is about to ban alcohol sales

Government officials have quashed rumours that an alcohol ban is about to be enforced in Thailand.

Rumours regarding the ban on the sale of alcohol began circulating online last week and by Christmas Eve had even been reported by some mainstream Thai news outlets.

The reports claimed that alcohol sales would be banned nationwide as a preventative measure against the new wave of coronavirus cases in Thailand.

However, government officials have said there is no truth to reports of an impending ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages, Daily News reported

Despite the new wave of COVID-19 cases, officials consider the situation as being under control, therefore there is no need to introduce a nationwide alcohol ban.

Some restrictions to the sale of alcohol may apply but only in areas where the new wave COVID-19 infections is highest.

On Friday, the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration also confirmed there was no truth to rumours of an alcohol ban.

Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin, the spokesperson for the CCSA, said the ban on alcohol sales was one of many rumours being spread online in what has been as “fake news”.

Currently bars, pubs and restaurants are allowed to sell alcohol as normal, as are supermarkets and convenience stores.

However, all establishments must have strict screening and social distancing measures in place.

So could we expect that to be the whole of Thailand in a few days.

I guess quashed (literally) after a petition from herd of fat bar buffalos claiming destitution !

December 31st staying home & no alcohol... WOW... that really would be Happy New Year... Not!

My thread has now been closed (fair enough) but it was specifically about 7Elevens not selling from 27th - 4th.

Any updates on this? Do any members have a relationship with their local 7Eleven staff? Mine told me it's true.

On a positive note, there still is a slim chance (1.2066%) that they actually told the truth.

I'd rather believe some rumors on my favorite TV forum than an "official statement", released by some of those fantastic officials. Oh. I'm off to Macro just before it's turning 2pm.

Yes, because everyone knows having a couple of beers spreads the virus like wild fire. Do these 'officials' realise how stupid they sound ?

We, the thai government are banning alcohol sales in order to stop covid

Instead of drinking alcohol we recommend you hug and kiss all your friends and strangers on the street (this is based on reliable information found on the back of a box of pop tarts)

What would be the connection between alcohol and covid?

I ask for a friend

as people cannot be trusted to look out for others while under the influence so they should shut it down till cases are stabilized. Keeping bars open in other countries during this pandemic was a deadly mistake that could of been avoided if it wasn't for the rampant addiction rates..

No. From so called gentlemen who produce over priced alcoholic drinks and run the country in the background. The tax by the way that swells Thailand's coffers. What are you doing for Thailand?

My local Makro doesn't sell alcohol at all, as it's about 250 metres from a university. The 7-11 directly opposite the university sells, though ????

Time to dust off the still.

Went to Makro last week with wife to stock up her restaurant for Xmas. Alcohol sales to license holder had just got back to normal. Which means she can buy 10 liters anytime. Got to the booze aisle. Blocked by blue plastic pipe again. Went to see manager. Can we buy. Yes no problem. Back to booze aisle. Assistant told us too go away?

Back to manager who then came with us. Gave the assistant a bollocking told her to read notice. Only 5 people at one time. So then went to meat department where there  were about 20 people pushing and shoving trying to get their goods wieghed.

Only 5 people in a 100 meter aisle to buy the dreaded alcohol but 20 all crammed together buying meat. That's okay. Talk about braindead

  • Popular Post

Yeah, sure. I can just see the local stores in the villages listening to the government when they say you can't sell alcohol. Just like the villagers listen when the government says don't burn the forests and rice fields.

Of course they won't ban alcohol - they need the taxes to pay for their moon mission!

After that latest statement, it makes me more convinced than ever that I did the right thing buying two cases of hooch a few days back.

I get so many bottles in xmasgift from 3 of my daugthers that i can drink at least a week

They usually put up a warning sign in advance and staff often tell foreigners. The 7/11 staff are brilliant front line workers. I often tip them
