Covid outbreak: Samut Sakhon stable but more cases associated with Big Bike meet

Dr Sophon Iamsirithavorn of the Ministry of Public Health said yesterday that incidences of coronavirus connected to the Central Shrimp Market in Samut Sakhon had stabilized over the last 24 hours.

He put the total cases in Thailand at 6,285 of which 4,180 had recovered. There had been 60 deaths (the Daily News report apparently did not include the one reported in Rayong yesterday).

Five were seriously ill in hospital with the disease.

Some 197 tests had been done at the Mae Phuang market community turning up 11 positive cases though all 30 residents of a care home tested negative.

Of 11,874 tests carried out 1,367 or 11.5% were positive.

There were however several new cases - six in total with one more under investigation - associated with a Big Bike event held in Koh Lanta, Krabi on December 11th to 12th.

Bikers from Samut Sakhon were in attendance as well as those from other parts of Thailand.

Cases associated with the event have been found in Phuket (2), Songkhla, Narathiwat and now a 41 year old company employee in Bangkok.

They are still talking about the bikers. I have the feeling that it is useless to trace cases because there are so many cases at very many different locations in the meantime.

Sure enough, I knew a "big biker" many years ago who went by the nickname of "Virus". I swear! A huge intimidating-looking hunk of a guy, but with a heart of pure gold.

What exactly does this mean with an 11.5% infection rate and over 1,500 positives in Samut Sakhon. Almost 12,000  tests is very small. Outbreak in the northern beach area of Sydney. Last 2 wks over 400,000 tests. Add a zero to the Thai tests and at 11.5% you get 15,000 in Samut Sakhon. I know it doesn't work this way but 120,000 tests will find more infections. This is what mass testing is about. Find, trace and isolate.

I guess at that time no-one knew of the SS connection.

IMHO that is why Thailand only does "mass" testing after a spike which puts them 3 or more days behind and they have to play catchup. Also, if they did mass testing, again IMHO, they would find more cases which would result in a massive loss of face.

Face of course is far more important than the health and welfare of the Thai people.

Yep. Completely insane this face <deleted> (deleted lol). Thailand number 1 no matter the price. Challenge to the Thai govt and the fan boys on here. Set up testing stations in every amphur and test. Honestly post results. The money is in the bank and it can be done. 10% (a low figure) of the entire population in 1 month. This is still a lot lower per capita than most countries. About 800,000 tests in a month. Guarantee the number of infections will be huge. Countries are doing this is less than a week.
