In the past, Thai train journeys at night were fun and romantic, in the sense of being on a journey.

For over 20 years I worked in Bangkok whilst my Thai family lived in Udon Thani province. Long weekends, holidays, I must have got the night train countless times.

There used to be a buffet car serving beer, food and playing Thai music. It was open windows, no air con. As the train rocked along, gaining speed outside Bangkok, it was great fun to drink, eat and chat to fellow travellers whilst the world outside passed by, so close. You could smell the earth.

Then a Thai railway official raped and killed a 14 year old girl on the night train from the south to Bangkok. He blamed a mixture of alcohol and amphetamines for releasing his inhibitions.

All alcohol on trains and train stations was banned for all!

Then air con trains replaced the older carriages. The outside world was now cut off from those inside the train who by now always turned to their phones for human interaction.

The romance was dead.

Wow, how did Marrakesh Express slip by until now?

Nice story about Thailand, bannork.  I'd encourage you to memorialise it here:

Another great song off of one of Elton's classic LPs from what I consider to be his most creative period.  Every album from his '69 Empty Sky debut through at least the '75 Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy album are immortal.

Perhaps there isn't one more beautiful than Tiny Dancer off of his '71 Madman Across The Water LP.

Cat Stevens had a slew of back-to-back-to-back albums in the early 70's which were near perfect.  Mona Bone Jakon and Tea For The Tillerman in '70, Teaser And The Firecat in '71, and Catch Bull At Four in '72.

Father And Son from Tea For The Tillerman.

Beautiful harmonies from the Roche sisters off of their '82 Keep On Doing LP.  King Crimson founder Robert Fripp on guitar, founding member of Yes Bill Bruford on drums, and King Crimson/Peter Gabriel contributor Tony Levin on bass.

Listening to this guy a lot recently. Very chill beats.

A couple of nice tunes there, Denim, but I think you accidentally posted in the wrong music thread.  This is the music thread for old people.  Very old people.

BTW, nice Emiliano Zapata quote as your signature.

Yes with And You and I off of their '72 Close To The Edge album.

Ahn YES. Yes indeed. Since you have shown a passing interest in ' progressive music , and probably still have some flared jeans and satin jacket in your attic , I am going to jump on this opportunity to compensate for my previous faux pas with this masterpiece :

The funny thing is at the time of writing the song, none of the band had been to Kashmir.

Their first 4 albums were simply magic. A new sound played by great musicians.

Listening to this on our 50 quid stereo systems or on headphones when we were 14 was mind blowing, we were taken to places neither school nor our parents had ever heard of.
