convert tourist visa to non-ED visa

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I am gonna come to Bangkok, Thailand next spring for a curricular internship which means that I should apply for a non-ED visa at a local consulate/embassy. However, these days they are not issuing non-ED visas for internship purposes. So, I would like to know is it possible to convert my 60-day tourist visa to non-ED visa within Thailand? Many thanks in advance.

You would not be able to change from a tourist visa entry to a non-ed visa for a internship. It is only done for those attending universities and other formal schools.

Is the internship through a university?

If it should be directly with a company, i think you would need a non-b visa and work permit.

It would be provided by a university located in Bangkok. So I am probably not qualified for applying for a non-B visa.

A non-ed visa is issued for internships all the time by embassies and consulates for a internship. The are done through a university.

A non-b visa and work permit will not normally be issued for a internship.

I am aware that I should be applying for non-ed visa, but things are tricky during covid-19 and they are not issuing that type of visa for internships (at least the ones I contacted). I contacted local consulates and they replied me as follow:

For those who wish to attend a conference, a training, an internship or a course organized by the government agency, state enterprise, international organization or Embassy and Consulate (currently not permitted)

So I am just trying to explore any possibilities which will allow me to do the internships there.

Non-ed visas for attending a informal school or a internship are one of the few left that cannot apply for a certificate of entry and the non-ed visa. I have been expecting them to open up a little more but with 2nd wave we are having now it may not occur any time soon.

This from a embassy website.

"Currently, the following types of visas are NOT permitted to enter Thailand: Transit passengers (TS), Sports visa holders (S), Monks and other religious visa holders (R) and their spouses or children, Volunteers (O), and non-formal students visa holders (such as language schools, diving schools, boxing schools). "

Thank u so much for ur reply.

I was told by the local consulate last month to come back and check at the end of Feb since they also think there would be some updates for me just as u have expected.

But the 2nd wave has caused so many uncertainties. Probably it will not be back on the table any time soon.

Wish u best luck and stay healthy during the difficult time!
