Looking for insurance that will really cover hospitalization that is not medically necessary if I test positive (in ASQ for example). I already have good European insurance for medically necessary treatment. Still in Europe, planning to travel in 10 days. Age 62.

Many thanks for any suggestions.

When purchasing your existing insurance you can ensure that you are covered for hospitalisation for any Covid-19 related reason.

You could enquire and receive in writing that they will cover you for hospitalisation according to Thai Government Policy if you test positive for Covid-19.

Alternatively, you may find some insurance companies which handle specifically a payout should you test positive for Covid-19.

It should be accepted if it will cover at least $100.000 of treatment for covid 19. I suggest you contact the embassy that will be issuing your certificate of entry (COE) about it. Or submit the application for the COE (https://coethailand.mfa.go.th/) to find if it will be accepted.

You will not even reach the ASQ without such an insurance, that's the mandatory $100,000 Covid-19 insurance, and it's quite affordable, if you use the approved companies HERE.

I think his question is not how to meet the COE requirement but how to have insurance that will actually pay the costs if he is hospitalized for COVID without medical necessity, given that it is Thai policy to hospitalize all COVID cases, even the asymptomatic.

This has not yet been put to the test (that I know of) but there is concern that an international insurer might refuse to pay for hospitalization in cases where there is no medical indication.   Thailand considers it medically necessary to hospitalize all COVID+ cases for reasons of disease control but there is no guarantee that rationale would be acceptable to an insurer.

Of course the level of detail that most Thai hospitals provide to insurers is so scanty that it would be hard for an insurer to determine, beyond the fact that the person had COVID, whether they were symptomatic.

If concerned about this the best approach is to get one of the local COVID only policies listed here https://covid19.tgia.org/

@Sheryl Thank you for commenting. In the meantime my insurance agent indicated that if one is COVID-Positive the hospitalization is considered medically necessary and coverage apply. Hopefully I won't need to put it to the test :-)
