Sound Insulation of Metal Sheet Roof

Recommended Posts

Hi, I just completed my house with a metal sheet roof.  The builder assured me that a bit of insulation foil directly under the roof and 10 cm of glass wool insulation lying on the suspended plaster ceiling would be sufficient sound insulation. Unfortunately, it's still very loud in the bedroom below, when there is hard rain.
I am considering to put Safe‘n’Sound Rockwoll sheets on top of the plaster ceiling, but it's not easy to put the sheets onto the ceiling. Alternatively, I am thinking of putting synthetic or natural thatch on top of the metal sheet roof, so the rain isn't actually hitting the metal sheets anymore.
Any thoughts what would work best in my case ?
The pent roof is not visible from below, so the solution doesn't really need to look "nice".

Putting a thatch may help don't know of costs.

Underline the roof to the underside of the the roof structure is another way.

Just putting another layer of insulation on top of the existing may reduce rain noise quite a bit more.

I'd just wish it would rain. ????

My dog kennel roof is just corrugated tin and obviously gets fairly hot so I put a layer of thatch on over the tin to try and keep the inside a bit cooler.

Keeping the sun directly off the tin roof helped keep it a bit cooler but unfortunately, probably because there was no airflow round the thatch it started to rot pretty quickly.

Only lasted a few months in the rainy season, and made a mess with the rotting vegetation.

I think you thought to save a few bucks by putting a tin roof on.

At the end it will cost you more to get it comfortable, than if you had opted for the cheapest roof tiles

Solar panels over the roof will help keep noise and heat down and also give you cheaper energy.

Heat insulation materials need to be low in mass. Sound insulation materials need to be heavy...eg. Lead is a good sound insulator. You could try some recording studio solutions but they are expensive.

Ear plugs are your best bet.

For better result, try get higher density rockwoll sheets. Low density doesn't reduce much of sound and heat.
What is your floor height? Maybe too low may sound very loud.

This might sound crazy, how about changing new ceiling (assuming) gypsum board to thicker type.

the rockwool should ideally sit directly underneath of the roof sheet. ontop of the rafters / trusses supported by a wire mesh

The thicker the roof sheet the less noise transmits as it is more dense. 0.38 is the minimum i use

You can buy rockwool slabs from lazada (dense)  and install them underneath the roof sheet and between the rafters/ trusses they will need to be held up with some thing like a mesh normall a foil/ vapour barrier is installed with the insuklation to take any condensation down the roof  and not into the house

look at the installation document for colorbond roofing and it will show you how it should have been done and aim to get close to that, i dont know how big you roof is but you could just take the sheets off and do it properly.

Also you live in the tropics so heavy rain is to be expected ideally not deafening sound but  when its hammering down  it'll be noisy even if you were standing in the forrest with no roof.

I already have solar panels on the metal roof. Doesn't reduce the sound a bit as it is not covering the roof completely.
