Florida also never really shutdown and their economy isn’t “devastated” (much to the mockery of the American left, who’s eating crow now) so if you want to make the argument that it should be up to states and their electorate, then by all means, I’m right there with you, but that’s an entirely different argument altogether.

No states ever really shut down their economy. Just baseless right wing rhetoric. Even headline unemployment figures show the falsity of your contention about Florida

And this is the headline unemployment figure. I'll see if I can track down some of the other indices that include discouraged workers when I have time.

And how could it be otherwise? Florida has a huge tourism industry. Lots of low paid service workers are out of jobs.

It's not easy to try and compare how Florida did to other states that locked down.  And the American left is hardly eating crow over this.

Read this.  It's very complex with no easy answers.  Though some on the right do try.

Stop making things up. You know nothing about my personal history. I could claim that in fact I have worked for hourly wages but what would be the point? We are all anonymous here. Comments like yours reveal nothing useful about your targets. They do say plenty about your standards of reasoning, though.

As for staying in a minimum wage job. There is plenty of evidence to show that people do get stuck in them. Particularly those with low education levels.

One guy works in a Co. for 5 yrs working his way up the ladder of responsibility to make $15/hr. Starting wage jumps from $10/hr to $15/hr overnight. And you don't see any problem with that.

NY and California had extreme closures. Among others. That ain’t “right wing rhetoric” that’s an absolute fact.

And that graph makes an entirely different point than you think it does. They held their own against an average of all the states even when that average included states with extreme closures and unemployment.

How you think this is helping your argument is beyond me, but again, if it’s that bad, how is a fed law of $15/hour gonna help.

It doesn’t.

It sure does help those that dont make that amount, which in turn helps the evonomy.

Miami, the most populous county in Florida, had extreme closures.  That ain't "left wing rhetoric" that's an absolute fact.

And guess what!  Florida has already raised the wage to $15.  Are they becoming blue? :cheesy:

One winner emerged in Florida’s election that wasn’t President Donald Trump or former Vice President Joe Biden.

It was the $15 an hour state minimum wage.

The initiative passed on Tuesday with 60.8% of the vote, just over the 60% minimum required for approval.

You claimed that some states "shut down" their economies. I called that nonsensical right wing rhetoric.  Now you're trying to wriggle out of that claim by saying that they had "extreme closures". There's a huge difference between what you call "extreme closures" and shutting down.

And during the summer, when covid cases and deaths should  have plummeted, they surged in Florida. And it's hard to figure out how bad the surge is and was because the Florida State govt. has a history of concealing the data.

Even by Florida standards, Gov. Ron DeSantis is a covid-19 catastrophe

Now DeSantis is refusing to release the weekly White House Coronavirus Task Force Reports on Florida, and news organizations are suing. Replete with dire warnings, the reports apparently contradict his cavalier way of doing business here.

How big a problem is that compared to a guy who earns so little that his family is eligible for food stamps?

There is no perfect solution. We better fix the problem of why a kid graduates from high school without any skills, apprentice ship programs for the trades in high school.

You're right. There is no perfect solution. But it's worse that people earning minimum wage can't make enough to survive than the possibility that some workers will feel envy and resentment should the minimum wage rise. And, if there was universal health care in the USA, as there is in most economically developed nations, that alone would make life for the working poor, as well as for the middle clases, a lot more bearable.

Here's something else for Biden to do. Or, rather, undo:

Trump lifted coronavirus travel restrictions from Europe and Brazil; Biden team says it won’t last.

President Trump on Monday ordered an end to the ban on travelers from Europe and Brazil that had been aimed at stopping the spread of the coronavirus to the United States, a move that was quickly rejected by aides to President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr., who said Mr. Biden will rescind the move when he takes office on Wednesday.

In a proclamation issued late Monday, Mr. Trump said that the travel restrictions, which applied to non-citizens trying to come to the United States after spending time in those areas, would no longer be needed on Jan. 26, the date on which those passengers will be required to present proof of a negative coronvirus test before boarding a flight.

Mr. Trump wrote that Alex Azar, the secretary of health and human services, had recommended ending the restrictions on travel from most parts of Europe and Brazil, while maintaining restrictions on Iran and China, which Mr. Trump said had not been cooperative.

Why?

Well, for one thing, his medical team rejects it. For another testing isn't 100% accurate. Also, someone can be infected in the interval between being tested and boarding the flight.

So? The virus is already running rampant and vaccinations are already rolling out.

More restrictions will do absolutely nothing, unless its one of those "Trump did it so for that reason alone it needs to be undone" kinda things.

Like we all know it is.

Printing more trillions !! takes a genius to work that one out.

You don't get to complain about 'printing more trillions' when the GOP added $8 trillion (2 of which were basically a hand-out to the rich and corporates) to the national debt in 4 years.

The party of 'fiscal responsibility' proved anything but and that means they can shut up for the foreseeable until the adults sort out all the problems.

These arguments are SO dispiriting. If you tax businesses at a fair rate then the social programs get paid, negating that ridiculous "printing trillions" hogwash.

The US is the wealthiest nation in the history of the planet. It's proven again and again politicians (both sides of the aisle) loot the piggy bank and the downtrodden bear the brunt of their greed. Dispiriting and deplorable.
