Thailand isn't "catching up" to Vietnam except in a very limited number of areas. It's the other way round - Vietnam is fast catching up to Thailand.

The problem is some things like gambling legalization haven't been address for decades and are only now coming to the forefront.

How long before Vietnam overtakes Thailand, particularly in the tourism and manufacturing sectors, both of which are big employers in Thailand?

5 years?  10 years?  Anybody's guess, however Thailand's current situation might give Vietnam pause for thought regarding the benefits of an uncontrolled expansion of their tourist industry based on the volume model, and the dependency it creates in the wider economy.

I would put it at somewhere between 5 to 10 years.

I think Vietnam may use Thailand's tourism industry as a "what not to do" example. ????
