The Supreme Court yesterday turned down a bail request by three environmental activists who were charged with “incitement to commit a felony or cause social unrest” over a Facebook post criticising the Phnom Penh authorities’ activities and production of a campaign video on the infilling of Boeng Tamouk Lake in September last year.

Acting Presiding Judge Chan Rainsey identified the three accused as Thun Ratha, a 29-year old man,  Long Kunthea, 22, and Phuong Keorasmey, 21. Judge Rainsey said that the three accused were arrested on September 5 and were charged with “incitement to commit a felony or cause social unrest” under Articles 494 and 495 of the Criminal Code.

“According to the trial, the defendants [the three accused] claimed that they had not committed any offence as accused by the lower court and asked the Supreme Court to release them on bail,” he said when reading his verdict.
