The ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) yesterday slammed the court-dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) for calling on people to adopt and practise the “three-finger salute” of protesters in Myanmar and Thailand. The ex-CNRP vice president Mu Sochua is urging people on social media to use the “three-finger salute” which is being practised by protesters in Myanmar and Thailand against their governments. She called on the people to “stand with the people of Myanmar because it is our right and duty”.

She said Cambodian people want “freedom, justice and true democracy”, calling on people to stand up like those in Myanmar did against the bloodless military coup. “Right now, we raise the three-finger salute for Asean, Burma (Myanmar), Thailand, Cambodia and other countries. Please stand up by following the example of the people of Burma,” she said in a video clip posted to her official Facebook page.

CPP spokesman Sok Eysan said yesterday the activities of the ex-CNRP are “ridiculous”, saying the political situation in Cambodia is not same as in Myanmar. “The situations in Burma (Myanmar), Thailand and Cambodia are not the same because the CPP is the ruling party, so we have no reason to stage a coup or usurp power from those who have no power,” he said.

Any lack of respect that can be shown to the governments of Burma, Cambodia and Thailand is richly deserved. Though the last two like to refer to themselves as functioning democracies, the degree of suppression that they employ with regard to protests, criticism, reform, and the political opposition, shows that they are anything but, in practice.
