Public health minister confirms Sinovac vaccines to arrive on Wednesday

The first lot of Sinovac vaccine from China will arrive in Bangkok on Wednesday at 10am at Suvarnabhumi international airport, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said Sunday.

To confirm that the COVID-19 vaccine will definitely arrive on schedule, the minister showed a three and a half minute video clip to the media, showing Chinese workers moving stacks of boxes, containing the vaccine, from a warehouse and loading them onto a container to be flown to Thailand by Thai Airways International.

The consignment carries a message, reading:  “Hello Sinovac Vaccines.  Have a safe flight.  See you on Wednesday!” More doses will arrive through to April, amounting to two million doses.

Astra Zenica took 6 months to formulate, create, test and manufacture a vaccine from scratch.

Even with the recipe, Siam Bioscience can't manufacture the vaccine within 8 months of signing the agreement.

Good choice AZ.

It actually took 10 months for the University of Oxford to develop the AZ vaccine, not 6. And just how quickly could YOU build, or adapt a production plant to produce millions of doses per month?

I hope Thailand plans on vaccinating more than 3.3% of its population....

2 million Sinovac vaccines is a better number than the 150,000 AstraZeneca vaccines ordered.

Importantly, better information beyond the ‘Brazil report’ on the efficacy of the Sinovac vaccine is also important, while better than nothing, 50% is not yet good enough.

Hopefully the promised 26 million vaccines promised by May by the AstraZeneca-Siam Bioscience bilateral production will come through, things have gone very quiet on that front.

The Sinovac vaccine is a lot more important than many of us have given credit for.

Vaccines in wealthy countries are useless if the virus elsewhere is not controlled and antigenic drift results in such evolution of the virus that existing vaccines have limited efficacy.

The Sinovac vaccine fills a gap, it can be distributed more readily, doesn’t need refrigeration.

Thailand is apparently also developing its own vaccine.

Interesting times, ultimately times where the whole world needs to come together to ensure that primarily those in high risk groups are vaccinated, as soon as they are, we can surely all get back to normal.

The sinovac vaccine reduces the severity of covid 19 . That makes the 50 percent effective rate look far more sense . Added with the cost per vaccine ,  the ease of transport and availability all must make  sinovak  to be a wise choice of vaccine for developing countries like Thailand.

2 million doses by end of April... the country is holding on by threads and that's the best they can do?

All the endless non-stop talk talk talk about such a tiny amount of vaccine.  Finally maybe possibly perhaps arriving, but way too late and too little.

... the bloke is slick, I was told he really said 'will arrive on A wednesday', sooo ...

So what excuse will Anutin come up with when i does not arrive on wednesday?

The huge consignment of 200,000 doses will arrive on Wednesday for sure .. 100%

The banners have been made, all the balloons are being blown up as we speak, and the Brass Band is practicing, so they are in perfect time with the Dancing Girls.

2 million Sinovac doses vaccinate 1 million people, so 1/70 = 1.43% of the population.

But the vaccin will only be given to people above 18y=53 million. There are probably many ongoing studies regarding children so the recommendations might change.

At least one thing that does give cause for optimism is that, in the 'Western' countries that are now well in to the vax campaign (eg US, UK, Israel), within 3 or 4 weeks of the campaign starting the numbers of new infections start to fall dramatically. And will presumably continue to fall, which is exactly what we all need.

I agree entirely with apetryxx above. The most serious threat is that a vaccine which does not have total efficacy will allow the virus to become immune to the vaccine thereby making it totally useless.

I, for one, will continue to observe the restrictions and wait for the Astrozenica version as this has been properly tested.

Where has it been shown that a lower efficacy vaccine will allow the virus to become immune?
