As the number of COVID-19 cases and hotspots related to the “February 20 Community Incident” increase day by day, more than 10,000 Phnom Penh residents have been placed in quarantine after being directly or indirectly in contact with the patients. The number was confirmed by Phnom Penh governor Khuong Sreng, who added that the mass quarantine is the only way to prevent the widespread infection of the coronavirus in the capital.

“Doing this is not easy, but if we were not doing this, the situation could be so bad that the entire city would be locked down,” Sreng said. According to Sreng, many people have been quarantined at their houses or apartments or the hotels where they have been staying, while others were allowed to go to the state-run quarantine centres.

“The authorities have been doing their best to facilitate their quarantine,” he added. “For example, their relatives or friends are allowed to bring them food and other stuff, without going near them or in their places. Those who are in quarantine are also allowed to order food and other shopping online.”
