Sanook reported on a dreadful tragedy in the north east of Thailand that claimed the life of an eight year old boy.

He'd be alive today if a simple grate had been put on an irrigation pipe.

In the village of Nong Khem in Rattanaburi district of Surin a phu yai ban and farmer called Thawatchai, 46, wondered why water in an irrigation pipe to his field was not flowing properly.

He went to the nearby klong where three children were swimming.

He poked a stick in a 12 inch pipe under the surface that draws water into the irrigation pipe. There was no suction and something was blocking the flow.

The children ran back to the village and found out that no one had seen their friend Night, a P2 pupil, who had been swimming with them.

The children in their innocence were unaware that he had disappeared.

Back at the klong Thawatchai prayed that he was not going to find Night as he dug frantically at the earth to find what was causing the blockage.

He saw a leg.

Night had clearly been sucked in by the flow of the water into the pipe that was uncovered 80 cms under the water.

The boy's father said that his son was the child of his former wife who had left him when the child was only 7 days old.

He had left the boy in the care of his grandparents because he had to work in Bangkok.

He said that he had told the authorities that they should put a grate on the pipe.

Now he was faced with the cremation of his child on Wednesday.

He begged his former wife to come back this one last time to see her child.
