BANGKOK (NNT) - The Minister for Labor has ordered relevant agencies to extend legal assistance to over 1,300 former employees of Brilliant Alliance Thai Global Co. Ltd., a women’s under garment manufacturer in Samut Prakan province, that abruptly announced closure.

Chairperson of the Triumph International of Thailand Labor Union, Chitranawacharee Panad has submitted a letter to the Minister for Labor Suchat Chomklin requesting assistance retrieving compensation for termination of employment, after members of the union were abruptly let go when the business was closed on March 11.

The minister stated the government would provide care for all 1,388 individuals and seek urgent solutions. He has ordered proactive efforts by relevant agencies of his office, to uncover the reason for the sudden closure and plans for the provision of compensation. The Labor Welfare and Protection Office has stepped in to lead the employees in filing charges against their employer. Assets of the employer are to be probed in case they need to be seized to pay out compensation.

Meanwhile, workers of the company are to receive unemployment benefits from the Social Security Fund and are being considered for welfare assistance. The Department of Employment is to set up a booth and attempt to match the terminated employees with new jobs based on their prior duties and pay rates. The Department of Labor Skills Development is also offering courses on cooking and other career paths to those who wish to find new employment.

On workers impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Labor Minister said he has spoken with Chairman of the House Committee on Labor about aid measures such as proactive screening for COVID-19, leniency for foreign laborers, skills development, and financial aid such as a reduction in Social Security payments and an expansion of the Article 33 scheme.
