Sokha’s lawyers looking for royal intervention

Featured Replies

Amid the indefinite delay in the treason trial of former opposition leader Kem Sokha, his group of lawyers are looking for the possibility of intervention from King Norodom Sihamoni to clear the charge. However, the Ministry of Justice said Sokha’s lawyers should challenge the case with the court by using legal process rather than political means or intervention from the King.

Pheng Heng, one among four lawyers defending Sokha in court, said yesterday that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in the past weeks the Phnom Penh Municipal Court has limited their work and the lawyers also have not had an opportunity to discuss the future of Sokha’s case.

The lawyer is examining possible court procedures as well as the feasibility of requesting King  Sihamoni to intervene in his client’s treason case. He said the law does not ban the King from  intervening in the legal case. Sokha’s lawyers also previously claimed their client’s “treason” case was a political issue that required a political resolution, rather than a court settlement.
