rooster59
Chaiwat Limlikhit-akson, director of the 9th Office of Area Conservation Management, based in Thailand’s northeastern province of Ubon Ratchathani, was asked to resign from the civil service today (Friday), by the civil service committee of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. The committee’s decision is in line with the recommendation of the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission, that Chaiwat, former chief of the Kaeng Krachan national park in Phetchaburi province, should be asked to resign or be dismissed from the civil service, after finding him guilty of malfeasance in office over an incident a decade ago, when he led some of his officials in burning down about 100 houses of Karen indigenous villagers in Ban Kang Kloy, deep inside the Kaeng Krachan national park. All the Karen villagers were relocated to an area called Bangkloi Lang. The land was unsuitable for farming, however, so about 39 families went back to their previous location, called Bang Kloy Bon or Jai Paendin. The group was recently forced to leave again, resulting in many of them arriving in Bangkok and camping out in front of Government House, to demand the return of their ancestral land. mikebell
Justice - Thai Style. Corruption is rewarded; it has taken TEN years to decide he was guilty - so he gets to keep TEN years of pension benefits! 1 1

Popular Post internationalism
it's not likely about the case 10 years ago, but about murder of Billy, karen activist, in 2014. The DSI launched yet another investigation in september, after new evidence came to light. very likely he committed murder personally, with an aid of 3 accomplices from his subordinates to burn Billy's body and dispose remains from krachan dam. thailand is applying for listing kaeng krachan park as UNESCO protected area, with which come sponsoring. Condition of being accepted is protection not only natural resources, but also tribal people living in the park. As this project also covers neighbouring national park in myanmar (they are interconnected) I would think, that with a military coup in myanmar, UNESCO will put hold on proceeding. btw chaiwat was also a suspect in killing of a local politician who tried to defend karen population. He looks more like a serial killer than protectionist.

You can either resign with all benefits or if not we will involve the Police ! what choice would one make Oh and it also makes a difference who you and what nationality you are !

robblok
He already is banned from the civil service. So he no longer has that status. He should be sacked then he wont receive a pension. This is info from the Bangkok post for some reason they in general seem to have better articles with more information. I don't understand how he can be banned from civil service but still keep his job. Seems that the higher ups in Thailand are practically immune from losing their benefits. Then again most of their benefits come from corruption opportunities. He has none anymore. But he got off far to light for what he has done. The murder of the activist was almost sure him. However they can't prove it. DSI tried it but failed.

He would lose face by being sacked, getting caught-out is bad luck and trip to the Wat, a few wai's and a few Bht in the box fixes that.
