KannikaP
Hey all you Master Bakers out there. Is the flour I buy in the supermarket self-raising or not? ie Do they have baking powder/soda added? There are cake, all purpose and bread flours available. Obviously bread flour is not, but what about the other two, please.
worgeordie
I buy White Wings flour from Australia and it clearly states Plain or Self raising on the packet, others do not which is why I don't buy them ,although they are cheaper. regards Worgeordie
CharlieH
From a purely "use" point of view I would say no they do not because the results I had assuming "may be" they did were bad. Adding to them produced better results, IMHO 1

Obviously bread flour is not, but what about the other two, please. Cake flour is finely milled low gluten flour and produces fluffy cakes. All purpose flour I use for pancakes, tortillas, scones, Yorkshire puddings whenever you want a more solid end product. Unless it says 'self-raising' on the packet there is no baking powder in it. Baking powder is very cheap, add 1 level teaspoon to 100gm of ordinary flour and you have self-raising flour. pgrahmm
All the flours I bake with here need either yeast or baking powder to rise.... I have not seen any labelled self rising flour here - even in the remarkably well stocked bakers specialty shop in our nearby marketplace....
