THE WEEK THAT WAS The year long Phony War is over - unless you’re a pandemic denier

A year ago in this very column Rooster spoke about the “Phony War” in relation to the pandemic. Twelve months later it feels like hostilities have well and truly begun.

 

The Phony War for people like me who were not around when WWII began in September 1939 was the following eight month period when it really was all quiet on the Western Front. People like my mother in the east end of London wondered when or even if it would kick off. They were soon cowering in the Underground tunnels before returning to what was left of their houses.

 

Last April many things didn’t seem to add up. Why were places like Italy and Iran so desperate? Why had Thailand seemingly escaped the worst? Was tourism minister Pipat right that the wind would blow the virus away by Songkran…..

 

Even when sporadic outbreaks occurred later in the year, even when the market in Samut Sakhon threw up so many cases it seemed that Thailand had escaped the worst and the government might have actually done something good for a change.

 

We could all follow suit and be just a little bit smug. Not now.

 

Yesterday there were 2,839 cases and eight deaths. And they are only the ones we know about. The country is in lockdown and curfew in all but name.

 

I feel confident that the Thai public health service has - despite the irrelevance of head honcho Big Nut Anutin - made some good decisions and is coping well. But for how long?

 

The vaccine rollout is increasingly looking like the mother of Thai cock-ups. A rural medical chief slammed the government on Friday for mismanagement and poor decision making saying that Thailand was at the back of the vaccine queue worldwide. 

 

Of particular concern to this columnist is the large number of people - particularly on Thaivisa’s Facebook arm, far less so on the forum - who insist the pandemic is a hoax. I saw one who called Thaivisa scaremongers! Then there are those who spread malicious and idiotic nonsense about vaccines, people who believe they have a right to free speech.

 

It’s time not just to rid social media of such people but for governments to look at making it a crime to say such things, a bit like some nations have laws to rein in Holocaust deniers.

 

Pandemic and vaccine deniers need at the very least to be called out at every opportunity and possibly banned and prosecuted. 

 

For them the Phony War worldwide continues despite all the evidence to the contrary. Yet they are the phonies. As well as the people who click “like” on their drivel.

 

I remember well in the very first throes of the pandemic my own skepticism. It caused a torrent of abuse. But when it became obvious that I was wrong I was sensible enough to quickly change tack. Now I not only see the error of my ways, I have not only eaten humble pie but feel that serious action is needed against those who pooh-pooh the pandemic.

 

It was a hectic week on Thaivisa with many interesting stories filling our columns both pandemic and non-pandemic related.

 

Many expats in Thailand were up in arms about the decision to make tests for entering Phuket free for Thais but 500 baht for foreigners. Previously it was 300 baht for all so understandably the dual pricing argument reared its decidedly ugly head. 

 

While it is reasonable that people who have not necessarily paid into the public health system should pay why should the price be bumped up to cover Thais? All in all it was yet another money grabbing embarrassment of a PR disaster. 

 

Potential tourists would take one look at a debacle like that and think, I’ll go somewhere else where I won’t be ripped off. All for the sake of a few thousand baht. Pathetic.

 

Rooster would not go to Phuket under such circumstances. I’ve turned back from National Parks when the staff failed to comprehend that I was holding a residence certificate and work permit. I once suggested to Mrs R that I get in the boot and hide to get through the gate. 

 

She agreed rather too readily for my liking filling me with fear that she might “forget” I was in the back!

 

The health ministry said that Sinovac was safe but its efficacy when compared to other vaccines needs to be transparently announced so that people can make clear choices.

 

Except of course that in Thailand there is very little choice. Wait or wait, to be precise. And that wait is June when locally made AstraZeneca may or may not be available and may or may not be fully effective against the variants that will surely emerge by then. 

 

The PM, meanwhile, seemed delighted that such an upstanding member of the international community as V. Putin was going to help the Thais out with his Sputnik VAX. Maybe it's OK but I’d rather not have anything to do with that murdering tyrant (Putin, not Uncle Too, incidentally). And by all accounts it’s not even cheap!

 

Earlier in the week political strategist Songkhram Kitlertphairot of the Puea Chat opposition party laid into the premier and his cronies blaming Prayut for the death of his compatriots.

 

Meanwhile the embattled leader - barking nonsense as is his forte - defended the vaccination plans, said it was not slow and was not favoring one vaccine over another. 

 

As my eight year old said - the naughty misguided little girl - “Liar Liar Khaki Pants on Fire!”

 

Pictures in the Thai press showed a sad looking Pattaya. On what should have been the celebration of “Wan Lai” that always follows Songkran, the resort was deserted.

 

Up in Chaing Mai pictures of exhausted medical personnel at a field hospital brought home to netizens the reality of the pandemic for health workers.

 

Anutin went to Hua Hin where there were nearly 1000 virus cases, handed out supplies and claimed everything was under control, as many officials did this week.

 

Good news came for parents with word that the school term would not be delayed from May 17th. But there was a rather hefty caveat about having the pandemic under control. Expect a June 1st start at the earliest.

 

Pipat revised his foreign arrivals for 2021 figure by half. He’s starting to get close to reality. Zero will be about the correct figure give or take a few thousand. 

 

An online survey conducted on Chinese people suggested that 93% would look to the Thai vaccine rollout before making a holiday decision to come to Thailand. More than half those polled listed Thailand as their #1 destination though a third said they’d wait six months after the end of quarantine before holidaying in the Land of Smiles. 

 

Foreigners living in Thailand came in for a bit of standard blame. Two teachers at what appeared to be a bilingual school in Samut Prakan caused an outbreak after they brought the virus back from a bar in Phuket. They had attended a “goodbye teachers” event at which there was a lot of hugging. Sounded rather American!

 

While in Koh Samui, Thai news site Manager pointed their finger at foreigners who were not wearing masks at Mae Nam market.

 

Twenty thousand baht fines were in place though the court only ordered the first person prosecuted  to pay 4,000 baht (reduced to 2K on admission). The governor of Udon Thani then followed suit with a 20K order of his own.

 

Scandals this week were rather tame with a Facebook page claiming that first a policeman then secondly a forestry official had taken their wives on joyrides in state owned helicopters. 

 

The second did not look like a wife and her claim that all the pictures were taken on the ground looked dubious when a mountain with clouds appeared outside the helicopter window.

 

A whopper on a chopper!

 

Rooster went to town on a story about a Thai teacher on an exchange at a school in New South Wales. 

 

Somchai arrived in suit and tie on day one and was told he was a tad overdressed by a buddy teacher in shorts and open neck shirt. Further “revelation" followed when there was no one to respect at the flagpole at 8am and the kids enjoyed sport rather than endless lessons, as they would in Thai school. 

 

Rooster faithfully translated the spirit of the Aussie words with a little journalistic licence added.

 

In my youth I spent a year and more in Oz and learned to speak Ocker at Tubemakers of Western Australia in Perth. There everyone complained about the management with one shop floor co-worker telling me they were so bad that they started with the letter A.

 

Abysmal? Nah, mate. Awful, no way blue. Okay, I give up, I said.

 

Abnoxious, that’s what they are mate. Bladdy abnoxious. 

 

Perhaps surprisingly, given all that is going on in the world, the big story of the week was about Giant the Ban Dog, a kind of pit bull, that was taken to Wat Bang Lamung by his new owner to apologize to the corpse of his previous master who he had savaged to death. 

 

The wife of the deceased inquired as to his well-being before Giant made his excuses and left the “khor khama” ceremony muzzled and tail wagging. 

 

Whoever said it’s a dog’s life in Thailand was not far wrong. 

 

There was also great interest in CNN Travel's updated list of the 50 top “foods” in the world.

 

Massaman curry maintained it’s #1 spot but both Fish and Chips from the UK and buttered toast and marmite beat out Som Tam. 

 

How durian was not on the list I shall never know!

 

Finally, the Pak Kret police were obliged to take action after a YouTuber dressed as a Spartan armed with a spear spooked the locals while on a motorcycle at a red light in their jurisdiction. 

 

His elaborate head armour invoked one of three fines though it seemed a little unfair.

I would disagree with this statement. There's been plenty of outright pandemic deniers on Thai Visa or the more common 'is the cure worse than the virus' type or the other classic 'but, but Sweden!!' who have steadfastly insisted that the deaths pale into insignificence compared to the financial cost.

Perhaps they like Rooster can come on this forum now and admit they got it all wrong but I'll not hold my breath.

I’m confused, firstly by the multitude of ‘professional’ advice over covid-19, its effect physiologically and financially; now I’m confused that you are calling for a ban on freedom of speech.

 

It didn’t help that the WHO on January 14th 2020 twittered that they had found no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission of the novel coronavirus.

 

I don’t know who to thank most, our northerly neighbours for introducing this problem to the world or the internet for the deluge of mis-information.

The most important item in any Human is the right to Freedom of Speech whether you agree or not this right should be protected.  Without which we would be controlled by a dictatorial government where one could not speak out on any subject.   A very greasy pole to slipdown.

I think there has been quite a lot of conclusive evidence gathered since January 2020, being that it's 13 months ago now. 

And what 'deluge of mis-information' are you struggling with currently? Please let us know and I'm sure the more informed of us will try our level best to allay your confusion.

Isn't it just wondeful that everyone espouse freedom of speach when it's suits their agenda.

I suppose you are happy with complete freedom of speach for everyone so you'll be happy with ISIS, the KKK, paedophiles and every and all other individuals to enjoy the same freedoms? Yeah, thought not.

Misinformation is a real problem and at it's worse causes death and misery. No one is saying we should be limiting our hard fought for freedoms but a sensible approach to the VERY serious problem of mailcous and deliberate misinformation is just as essential as keeping things transparent and open.

Lives are at stake and if it requires the odd draconian law then so be it.

I am not a virus denier or an anti-vaxer.  What you are advocating is deeply troubling.  Social media is a monster that has slipped its bounds.  I don't pretend to have the answer.  However, the proposal of having the government and/or the social media companies determine what can be said is endorsing letting the fox mind the chicken coop.   There is a reason significant segments of society mistrust the government and tech companies ... they have demonstrated repeatedly that they can't be trusted.

The virus is real. However cases are being considered as hospitalisations and deaths which they are not. You can have the virus feel a bit under the weather for a while and then feel fine. The people who are at risk are those who are obese or have underlaying health problems.

Panikers that's what they are less than 1% die from covid and the other diseases it causes so don't worry , 1% of 67,000,000 million population is 670,000 there have only been 140 deaths so they are doing a great job as opposed to UK where it is 140,000 dead so stop moaning

The pandemic is real for sure. Just take a look at India atm. As to lockdowns i am not sure if they work or not. Masks for me do not protect the wearer but help to protect the people around you when you are infected. Social distancing is the biggest protection for me along with personal hygene. 

 

The one question i have is that how many people died of flu and pneumonia this past winter season? Seems like Covid was used to blame for all deaths.

How is what I have said moaning? It's only 140 deaths (so far) because of early and stringent measures put into place last year but as your example of 140,000 Uk deaths clearly demonstrate and a 1% mortality rate, that number can rise dramatically and expodentially.  But nothing i have said is 'moaning'? All my post mentioned is the huge amount of posters on this forum who have consistently and unsympathetically played down this pandemic with various misinformation and 'whataboutisms'. 

And it's cavalier attitudes of 'so don't worry' that so clearly exemplifies this. So in your estemeed opinion when should we all start worrying? 10, 000 deaths? 140,000 deaths? 250,000 deaths? or the full 670,000 deaths? 

Vigilance is not panicking and pointing out facts isn't moaning.

Like Rooster said, there are still people denying the holocaust, we all know that it happend why should they be allowed to lie about it. That is not freedom of speech or a different opinion. Also those anti vaxers were talking about how many people would die.. i believe close to or over 1 billion vaccinated already. Where are all the people that are dropping dead.. or growing a third arm (you know it messes with your DNA is one of those claims).

Sure there have been deaths, but that happens with all medicine. As long as the cure is not much more lethal then the disease its a moot point. But it has to be said the number of deaths because of vaccination are miniscule compared to the number of vaccinations. Now compare that to covid deaths.

 

Its time that antivaxers and covid deniers are called what they are the fruitcakes (and that is naming it nicely)

 

Hopping from one theory to an other each time forgetting that their previous theories have been debunked. Never looking back at their track record and thinking that they might be wrong. People should look down onto these strange people.

 

I am still amazed because some of those people are actually not stupid, some are even smart. Then again religious people are the same so i should not be so surprised. Some people just can't accept logic and the truth if it does not conform to their opinion.

 

Everyone hates this virus and wants it to be over, the efforts of anti vaxers and covid deniers are making this harder.

 

Maybe those caught doing it should be made to work at a hospital among covid patients. Then they can explain to those patients how they are not sick and that they are not dying from the disease but from their other health conditions. I am sure that would be a fun conversation.

Forbidden questions are:

I agree with you wholeheartedly, It is clear that differences of opinion are required for our species to survive and have a better understanding of how things work in society, i.e. we can NEVER take one side or listen to one side, otherwise we would be no better off than sheep, the majority of the human race has been conditioned to obey and not think outside the square.

 

We MUST listen to BOTH sides and then, make our OWN minds up as individuals, there is no right or wrong, it's all about perception, if people are gullible to believe one side over the other without thinking outside the square and not doing their own research, then they are no different than sheep, that is what separates those of us that think, as opposed to those who trust whatever they are fed.

 

In my opinion and from my extensive research, I can clearly see that there is a virus out there, yes it kills, yes it spreads more easily and a vaccine is required to reduce it's level of spread and damage that it does to those infected, however I do not see THEM, i.e. all world leaders listening to anyone outside of the WHO, the CDC and the FDA who have not suggested any other medicines to take which have been around for a long time, they have actually shelved them, and taken Doctors to task, you know the guys in white robes that we have trusted for decades, instead replaced them with government admin and front line puppets like Dr Fauci in my opinion, so Dr's are not allowed to treat their patients, this is a first, whatever happened to Dr, Patient privileges, e.g. something else in lieu of there being no vaccines available at that time, governments stepped in and took control over Dr's, remember, these are professionals in their chosen fields, I have NEVER heard of this before, and am suspicious as to why, previously it was always up to the Dr on how he/she would treat the patient, this to me is now nothing short of tyranny, where countries that have always been considered free, are now oppressed by their governments arbitrary use of powers.

 

One only has to look at all the research out there that suggests that the Flu shot may provide up to 24% protection against Covid, better than nothing at the moment, the Pneumonia vaccine may also provide some protection.

 

Research on the drugs that the Thai government are providing to Covid patients, e.g. Favipiravir was originally made in Japan back in 2014 for the Influenza, but their recent study on it's effect on Covid showed it didn't work because it didn't follow the golden standard, although the evidence showed it did, so was eventually scraped and it's patent expired.

 

Thailand now makes it (legally) and is giving it to it's Covid patients, but no large scale studies have been conducted, so good for them for going against the golden standard "grain" and experimenting to see if it works, I mean, it appears to work as we see the amount of those coming out of hospital to be higher than those remaining in hospital, so why aren't others trying it, or something else, could it be this golden standard process in a pandemic ? 

 

It's always been a massive PUSH for the vaccine from the start, 12-18 time, but no to anything else professionals had prescribed/suggested, who cares, shut them down, remove their licenses, right, that is freedom ?

 

Dr to Covid patient; we don't have anything at the moment, the vaccines are 3,4,5,6 months away, will you agree to try this drug, or that drug which may or may not work, we have given xyz patients this drug and xyz patients have recovered and zxy patients have not, it is up to you, and if it works, all and good then you can get vaccinated when the vaccines arrives later, if it doesn't, at least we tried, better than nothing, the other alternative is try to fight it off yourself and hopefully not die and not have long Covid.

 

But to suggest we are conspiracy theorists for thinking or commenting outside the main media, one sided spill, is an absolute disgrace to those who are so fixated on being and believing the one sided views.

 

A coin will always has two sides to it, here are two sides to back me up and hopefully not warrant me being warned again or being suspended for my views.
