Are American Foreign Residents Totally Powerless?

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

The absence of vaccines has dragged on for a long time.  The Thai government seems to be totally confused about whether, how and when American foreign residents will be vaccinated.  The dithering just goes on and on.   I think that it is time to appeal to the US Marines to fly in a squadron of Ospreys laden with vaccine supplies and land them on the embassy grounds on Wireless.  They could set up a small camp and remain long enough to allow all Americans in the country to come for a vaccination.  It's clear that the Thai government holds our lives in no regard.  The US military has run such missions before to rescue Americans whose lives were in danger.   We now need to call on the military to save our lives.  The Thai government certainly isn't going to do it.  Our lives are indeed in danger here and many of us can't easily fly out.

Can anybody get behind this and join a petition to the US Embassy or even the Pacific Command in Hawaii?  The time for inaction is past.  We must save ourselves!

US Military intervention seems necessary. ????    I think that this debacle will strongly affect future tourism. Not vaccinating Americans will make zero difference to future tour

Stranger than Fiction!

Nothing strange about this... the US government sent a diplomatic container with the vaccine to it's embassy, Pfizer - even if they knew about it - had nothing to do with importing the vaccine, because technically, the vaccine in the diplomatic package in theory never left US soil and property.

There are numerous examples of Americans whose lives were in danger in friendly or neutral countries being rescued by small American contingencies.  Think of Gen Schwarzkopf.  Americans can't rescue citizens of other countries.  That is up to those countries' embassies or militaries.  I think that many foreign embassy staff and their Thai employees have already been surreptitiously vaccinated.

As the different government entities discuss vaccine permissions to be passed between them and then government registered patients being recommended to a hospital for a likely kickback.  The tax and fees will be paid by the foreign vaccinees.   This is still only at the stage of discussion at committee meetings. When the vaccines will be ordered is apparently not known.  This is actually putting the lives of us old guys in danger.   I could leave personally but many American residents can't afford to do that.  That's why

US Military intervention seems necessary.  The Thais seem to care very little about saving elderly American lives.   Vaccinations could have been started much earlier.  Medical staff seem furious about the situation.  I think that this debacle will strongly affect future tourism.   Amazing Thailand Indeed!

5 minutes after they do away with the quarantine, the flights to Thailand will be jammed.

Did you just work that out? Perhaps you only moved to LOS recently?

BTW, why do think that applies only to Americans?

????

I think that this debacle will strongly affect future tourism.

Not vaccinating Americans will make zero difference to future tourism. Most tourists were not American.

The Thais seem to care very little about saving elderly American lives.

Given they have yet to "save" elderly Thai lives with vaccines, why should they care more about elderly Americans, most of which may be able to fly home to get vaccinated?

Why are Americans apparently more important than other farang groups?

Anyone who thinks that the U.S. Embassy or the Pacific Command is going to fly in an Osprey loaded with enough vaccines for the tens of thousands of American citizens living in Thailand to line up outside the chancery to get vaccinated is smoking something that I am not. The liability issues involved would be monumental, to say nothing of the security issues of having that many Americans in the same place at the same time- even if stretched over a few weeks. Yes, in the case of civil insurrection or a civil war where the airport is closed and there are no options for Americans to self-evacuate, the USG does mount rescue operations to retrieve U.S. citizens at great risk. I was involved in one in Lebanon that was extremely risky and logistically complicated, and it went largely without major problems, but this is an entirely different matter. U.S. citizens in Thailand have the option of returning home to the U.S. and getting vaccinated there, which is what I intend to do.

If they do fly in can I also get  America vaccine as a Canadian tourist? I'd be visiting a US embassy through one of them Thai agents.

So far there have been 1,098 per million cases of Covid in Thailand. That's 0.101% of population.

As far as deaths go there have been 5 deaths per million. That's 0.0005% of the population.

American lives are in danger! You're having a laugh aren't you mate? You'd be more at risk during the journey to and from the embassy to get your vaccination than you are from dying from Covid.

But in this case the Americans could easily fly back to guan or the states. Its not a danger thing its a money thing. They want the vaccine but don't want to pay the extra expenses of flying somewhere and back from their own pocket.

That is different from being under siege by armed militia and so on.

I suggest all those special Americans should go back to their oh so special country and stay there.

Maybe build a wall to make sure only good Americans are in your country.

Please don't paint all Americans with the same brush. The OP is of one opinion, many of us don't agree with him. One of  the problems of living in Thailand is that Thais tend to view all foreigners, no matter their personal behavior, as one. A misbehaving tourist tars all of us in the eyes of many Thais, especially government affiliated or older generation. Don't make the mistake of doing the same.

No they won't.

You think Thailand is the only country dealing with a pandemic and travel rules and regulations?

Think again.

Pretty sure Thailand is not on very many people's list at the moment.

Have a younger (40) Brit friend, married to a Thai with 2 kids. Lived in Thailand for almost 20 years. Worked for airlines in the region. Been unemployed for well over a year now. Whole family is back in the UK living with his parents. Still unable to find a job.

Many folks around the world have had a huge financial impact.

You have to love it when people speak on facts they only read in the news.

In Florida, USA, all covid restrictions lifted. No masks required. Life has been back to normal for quite a long time now.

Of course vaccines have been free and super easy to get.

Many hospitals and other places have a parking lot marked off. Drive into a designated space, roll your window down, get a vaccine, wait for 15 minutes for side effects, then drive off. That simple.

Such a silly post. I am surprised at the arrogance. The sense of entitlement is funny though.  US nationals are free to leave Thailand any time they want. No one is forcing them to stay. If an American life is in danger it is that American's responsibility since the American chose to be in Thailand. The US government has warned against foreign travel and has no legal or moral obligation to vaccinate any US national in Thailand.   The US government cannot just fly to its embassy in Bangkok. Aside from it being illegal, the US aircraft would be defended against.

It must be especially insulting to non Americans reading since USA has blocked all shipments of vaccine out of USA. It is crazy stupid that canada was purchasing Pfizer vaccine from Belgium plant because USA wouldn't allow more cost effective export of minimal amounts from Michigan factory. Americans forced Canada to spend tens of millions of $$ on air cargo and big carbon footprint.   If Americans were given preferential treatment in Thailand, the lives of Americans would become worthless over night. It's no different than going to a refugee camp in a famine zone and  than setting out a lavish picnic for a few people. The results would not be  pretty I think.

That is a fair comment. Thanks

I agree that not all Americans are the same - like any other nationality.

But it seems there are more Americans than others who have this "we are special" attitude.

Florida has had the highest number of Covid infections in the US for some time now. Please don't respond with data from before Florida dropped its restrictions.

California has the strictest Covid restrictions in the country, and has the lowest per capita infection rate in the US.

I am sorry that reality is so harsh for you. And yes, your internet friends are lying to you about Covid-19.

Like I said, Florida returned to normal long before Thailand even got started.

Don't believe everything you read in the news.

Remember how well Thailand was handling COVID?

It all seems well until you start testing people.

When Thailand tests the same number as Florida let us all know how many cases they come up with?

When you are only testing 2000 a day out of 66,000,000 people, what did you expect? The truth?

Off to the beach, then out to dinner ocean side.

Isn't life grand with no covid restrictions!

That is a reality!

PS Remember to wear your mask so you don't get arrested and fined 20,000 baht.

Now you are comparing Florida with Thailand. Okay, Florida has half the population of Thailand, but double the infections.
