Thailand’s Corrections Department has reported a total of 2,835 COVID-19 infections among inmates in prisons across the country, but it is confident that the situation is under control.

The department said, in its statement issued today (Wednesday), that coronavirus has spread inside prisons because of the admission of new prisoners and the fact that many, being held on remand, have to be escorted to and from court hearings and some of them may have contracted the virus outside the prison.

The department said, however, that it has imposed proactive and preventive measures, including the isolation of new arrivals for at least 21 days, during which they are subjected to two tests before they are moved into cells with other prisoners.

The only hope of "controlling" this situation is vaccination.

21 days ? Seems a little extreme

That's probably light compared to what the Judge will be giving them.

And how do you do that if dozens of inmates are shearing the same sleeping and cohabiting  at all times unless you vaccinate them? what? dose he know something others don't?...

Control it? It's a bit late for that now. Even Somchai's pet rat has it. Still it beats getting tuberculosis or HIV.

Additionally, why aren't these cases being recorded on the countries daily total?

Sincerely

So almost 3,000. Where are these numbers. They've obviously known about this for a while yet it's only just been revealed. This is a cover up. Heads must roll. Who else knew about this. Did the CCSA know? Did the 'PM' know? Maybe there will be a scapegoat but again the blame should go to the top. Makes you wonder if prisoners have died from covid and not added to the total and that the number of infections may be a lot higher.

Depends if they can find the money or not

The prison system is a black hole for infections, the one place where they will try to achieve herd immunity.

As mentioned before, the larger problem is the staff, because they are not locked up, they go home and can take the virus with them.

They forgot to mention social distancing. (Incidentally, I would be more worried about Baked Bean Wednesdays)

Controlling...

Auspicious that the article chose a photo with the guard wearing his mask on the chin?

Reassuring?

You decide.

"Under control" would have been when you found the first positive cases, implemented testing, quarantine and vaccines for all new prisoners.

Now, it is so far out of control, that you cannot contain it.

I hope your contact tracing for prison workers, van drivers, court staff, police, vendors and all their families as well as the other 141 prisons across Thailand is better than your efforts so far.

Fail.

Not that they would tell if it was.If they are holding back on these numbers what other numbers are being held back?Remember they rank 104th in the world for transparency and corruption.

Apparently Thailand isn't going down the "controlling road" but going for the natural herd immunity approach except for a few Hihoes sorry I spelt HiSos wrong again.

So temperature checks not working then?
Again no mention about protest leaders testing positive last week!! Why

Just another example of how they are manipulating the numbers every day; anyone who believes a single number from this Government of Gangsters and Thieves is deluded !

If they say they can control it why didn't they control it before it achieved this magnitude? The usual blather we expect to hear.

The real question that needs to asked, is how the Virus entered the prisons.

There are 3 main pathways that the Virus could have entered.

1) The prisoners themselves being infected and passing it around upon their entrance to the prison.

Highly unlikely, as the Correction Dept states that each prisoner has to undergo a 21 Day Quarantine. Unless of course this practice is not being done efficiently.

2) Transmission by Visitors

Most unlikely as the Visitors have been stopped from entering Prisons for some time now.

3) From the Prison Staff such as Guards , Admin Etc.

These people are the ones free to come and go each and every Day for their work, potentially bring in the Virus with every shift they work.

This is the most likely cause of the Prison outbreaks due to lack of control / training with Sanitation, work practices Etc

And yet, there are non of these people mentioned as being Infected.

Very strange that only the Prisoners are affected by the Virus.

Im amazed there hasn't been a few outbreaks before this, throwing 50 in a cell,

I have done a couple of visits to prison as a visitor in Thailand, they were behind glass panels with iron bars across and that wasn't high security

What makes you say there hasn't been as it seems they weren't going to tell us about this one.I'm not amazed they haven't reported some previous outbreaks.I stopped being amazed quite some time ago, like about 35 years ago when the were gunning down journalists in Bangkok.
