Only a few Baht per inmate for COVID-19 prevention in prisons, says former Transport Minister

Former Transport Minister Dr. Chadchart Sittipunt has highlighted the fact that only a small COVID-19 prevention budget, 750,000 Baht, has been allocated to cover all prisons nationwide. This averages out to only a few Baht per inmate, at a time when more than 11,000 inmates have tested positive for the virus.

In his Facebook post yesterday, Dr. Chadchart included a link to a Corrections Department document, dated May 11th and signed by Director-General Ayut Sinthopphan, which granted this amount to protect all 142 prisons nationwide, to procure and provide surgical masks, sanitizer gel, disposable gloves, personal protective equipment (PPE), infrared thermometers, 70% Ethyl Alcohol and cleaning sprays.

According to Justice Minister Somsak Thepsuthin, there are about 310,000 inmates in prisons across the country. Dr. Chadchart then calculated that only an average of 2.41 Baht per inmate is provided to fight COVID-19.

Yikes. That seems exhorbitant.

Surrpised they don't make the in-mates pay, and then they can make a profit?

Really NO COMMENT is required for this incompetence of the powers that be.

I predict a huge increase in breakouts from these outbreaks.

Coincidentally, they belong behind the very same bars, for stealing the country from the people.

So about 75% of the prison population is in on drug related charges, most probably users.  So given the minuscule about of funding allotted to prisons for Covid, is the overcrowding and resultant mass number of Covid cases Thailand's way of assigning death sentences to drug users?  It sure seems like it.

 Nice one.????

Joking aside, we could easily see a situation where the uneasy truce in Thai prisons collapses and all hell breaks loose !

I imagine the ratio of guards to inmates is about as indulgent as the COVID budget mentioned in the OP.

Strange that a former Transport Minister is saying this?

Perhaps more than 750,000 baht was actually allocated, but only 750,000 baht made it into the funds?

Political back-stabbing perhaps?

Somebody please grow a brain and let them have the vaccines they need.

Do what you normally do charge farangs extra for something

How  hard is  it , vaccinate  all inmates  now being as they cant stay 1-2  metres  apart, probably  have zero masks. Then start  actually  building prisons  that dont cram 30  into a 2 foot  cell, alternatively  order  more submarines.

Reap what you sow... how much is it going to cost the government per inmate now?

Or just stop incarcerating drug users.

shows you how cheap human life is here

Maybe this is why they put sand and stuff in the food so the inmates will change and pay for proper food. If no one wants the food then someone gets to pocket the cash, and the same if other times items are not bought for health.
