BANGKOK (NNT) - Bangkok City Hall will keep on running active COVID-19 testing at all 486 markets, as new clusters continue to emerge in the capital, while the government’s COVID-19 task force is encouraging people to quit smoking to reduce their health risks, including increased chances of severe COVID-19 symptoms.

The Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) updated the latest situation in Bangkok in today’s daily briefing, with new clusters emerging in Bang Na, Sathorn, and Khlong San districts.

The latest clusters in Khlong San are linked to Khlong Ton Sai community and Bang Lamphu Lang community, where 30 cases have been reported.

According to the CCSA’s Assistant Spokesperson Dr Apisamai Srirangsan, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will continue to provide active testing and case surveillance at all 486 markets in the capital, even the ones without reported cases, in order to locate, isolate, and treat patients. For safety, the city hall will also be on high alert for areas without previous reports of COVID-19 cases as well.

The CCSA clarified its announcement yesterday regarding a cluster in Huai Khwang district, saying that the cluster reported is linked to Rong Poon community, not Huai Khwang market, however the market will remain subject to stringent safety protocols by the Ministry of Public Health to prevent potential transmission.

On World No-Tobacco Day today, Dr Apisamai has urged the general public to stop smoking, referring to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) statement on 28th May, advising people to quit tobacco to reduce their risk of severe COVID-19 infection.

In the statement, the WHO Director General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said “Smokers have up to a 50% higher risk of developing severe disease leading to death from COVID-19, so quitting is the best thing smokers can do to lower their risk from the coronavirus, as well as the risk of developing cancers, heart disease and respiratory illnesses.”

In Thailand, a report from the Faculty of Medicine at Ramathibodi Hospital reveals Thailand currently sees 70,000 new smokers every year, mostly among teenagers, with e-cigarettes gaining popularity, while the death toll of smokers in 2017 was 72,656 people.

More than seven million people die every year around the globe from smoking, with some 800,000 affected by secondhand smoke.

The WHO has launched the Commit to Quit campaign to help at least 100 million people worldwide quit smoking this year.

Why don’t they also set up portable vaccination centres (vans) at these markets ????

Target the areas where there are problems.

Task hospitals, public and private with setting up a Van near all markets - liaise with local Amphur

There are 483 markets (as the report suggest) this is too much for the main government to handle, it has to relinquish responsibility to the community and hospitals in those communities.

If the government can provide ‘active testing’ and case surveillance at these markets, they can vaccinate there too.

Vaccinate with what?

The problem at the moment is the lack of vaccines

the only few ones available are mainly used in Phuket in the hope to be ready for the famous sandbox opening in 30 days

And therein lies the problem nationwide.... the complete and total ineffectiveness of this government to secure vaccines...  a real disappointment after doing so well at keeping the numbers down.

My bet it is precisely because they were doing so well during 1 year

that they became hyperconfident, thinking they had the time to set up

their own production, unfortunately the virus was faster, helped by

the porous border with Myanmar

the rest is history

Don't worry.. Mr. P has promised there will be enough vaccines for everyone in June. Oh wait, it's June now. Hmm
