Lightning claims 42 lives in first half of 2021

The National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM) reported that 42 people lost their lives to lightning in the first half of this year. NCDM spokesman Soth Kimkol Mony said yesterday that the victims included 15 women and 24 additional victims received non-fatal serious injuries.

 

Lightning also killed 26 cattle and destroyed four houses, he said. Another NCDM spokesman, Khut Sokha, said that the provinces worst hit by lightning were Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Oddar Menachey, Kampong Speu, Kandal and Kampong Cham.

 

“We do not have any special equipment to protect against lightning strikes, so we can only call on people living in rural areas, especially people living in highland areas, to be careful and not go out when it is raining unless necessary,” Sokha said.
