Thailand only - this is one of those news stories that perhaps just wouldn’t happen anywhere else. Image: Thairath

On Friday (June 11), delighted locals in Chachoengsao reported the first rainfall of the year just days after erecting a giant phallus in the middle of a road as part of a rainmaking ceremony.

On Wednesday (June 9), locals in Yothaka sub-district built a giant penis shaped amulet known as "Palad Khik” on a country road next to farmland, where farmers prayed and performed a rainmaking ceremony for rain to fall on their crops.

The farmers said the giant phallus represents fertility, strength and growth and after erecting something similar last year, the local area experienced sufficient rainfall for their crops.

On Saturday, Thailand’s Channel 3 reported that a considerable amount of rain had actually fallen just two days after locals performed the rainmaking ceremony.

A local village headman said the ceremony dates back hundreds of years and people are being disrespectful if they ridicule the ceremony and the farmers who took part in it.

The building of the phallus, first reported by Thaivisa on Friday, has not only garnered national but international attention, after the story was picked up by news outlets around the world.

Many commentators were in disbelief after the bizarre sight of a giant phallus in the road.

Despite the adoption of any supposed 'faith'. religion can never overcome the much older and more deeply entrenched superstition. Whatever the 'faith', it's always just a veneer slabbed on top of the foundation of superstition.

Most humans---East, West, North and South---have an innate need to believe in the silliest things.

So big cocks work, if they had just made a much smaller one

it would only have been a 5 Minute shower.

Very apt the channel 3 w*anchor reported on this story.

Unbelievable that he walked straight back into his job after his short jail spell.

I thought with his credentials of a lying, thieving POS he was perfectly suited for a ministerial position.

I am 80 kms from Chachoengsao, and it rains ! yesterday, too

but why do they mask the " object" ? everybody knows what a phallus is

If my balls were that colour I would be seeking medical advice..9

Well I'll be blowed... wasn't expecting that.

Initial analigous irony that such a dilated talisman would only serve to appease some of the biggest <deleted> humankind had to offer, gave way to the epiphany that perhaps it made a vas deferens afterall...

Good idea to check the weather report..........then get it built quickly just before the rains arrive........clever...could be a good little business there.

Up tomorrow : Family die after crashing into giant penis.

Idiots.

Yes, it does beg the question: Why in the middle of the road?

Top of a hill or middle of a paddy field would make more sense.

You have been watching TMD and the tracking of TS Koguma.

But it was a good reason for the locals to have a party.

When we erect a phallus in bed my wife reports 'rainfall' too.  ????

yeah yeah yeah  -  Kinda like the cloud seeding which is only done when it looks like it is going to rain and then when it does rain it's because of cloud seeding and not because it was going to rain anyway.

Worked to bloody well - has rained nearly nonstop for 48 hours and i am nowhere near them.

hence the sudden effects and downpour ????

Was it a downpour or more of an 'eruption' ?

What a silly news report trying to blurr that out. Very Thai. Someone in Pattaya who has a bar should buy that and use it as the spirit god's house. No doubt half of the girls working there would make merit at it every day. Tourists would come just to take pictures with it, especially the Chinese. You could let them take a picture for a small donation.
