In country on Non-O Marriage visa, need some details

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I am currently in Thailand on a Non-Immigrant "O" class single-entry visa. I have about a month left before it expires. I have two questions.

1. In the past, there was a one-time extension permitted for 2 months. Is this still possible?

2. To extend for a year, I need 400,000 baht in a Thai bank account in my name. Does the money have to be in the account 2 months prior to the extension? (I remember the immigration officer telling me that it had to be in the account two months before. Thus the purpose of the extension.)

In summary, is it possible to get the money in the account before I need to get the month extension, and then extend for a year at the end of the two month extension?

Back up plan: There was a single-entry Non-O spouse visa available at Savanakhet in Laos without the 40k/month or 400k baht requirement. Is this still available?

Thanks for your help.

  1. The regular 60-day extension of a Non O based on marriage to a Thai is still available (once only per entry into Thailand).
  2. The money must be in the bank for two months at the time you apply for the one-year extension. Thus, if the money has just arrived in your Thai account, and you then apply for the 60-day extension, the necessary seasoning is done by the end of the 60 days.

The Savannakhet consulate is currently closed but, even if this were not true, trying to do visa runs between Thailand and Laos is now out of the question.

1. The 60 day extension to visit your wife is still available.

There is also a 60 day covid 19 extension you can apply for now.

2. The 400k baht has to be in a Thai bank for 2 months on the day you apply for the one year extension of stay.

You can apply for the the one year extension near the end of the 60 day extension when money has been in the bank for 2 months.

If the borders were open you could still apply for a non-o visa in Savannakhet.

Thank you for the replies. It's good to know that SE Asia is pretty much locked down. I didn't know this.

In the case of the 60 day covid extension, Thaiger says one of the following must be true:

  • A foreigner cannot return to their home country due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • There are no return flights available.
  • The foreigner has a letter from their embassy requesting temporary stay.

The first bullet is what I would be hoping to use. I technically can return home, it's just very impractical after having just moved back here from my home country and then spending two back-to-back fortnights in quarantine. I was told this extension did not apply to my case. Is there something I'm missing about the 60-day covid extension?

Thanks

That Thaiger article was true at one time many months ago. Now, if your immigration office wants anything, they will want you to sign an affidavit to the effect that Covid prevents your return to home country. You do not need to be specific about why.

I see. Thank you for the info. I will check out my local immigration office.
