Home internet or pocket wifi alternative?

After being gone for a long time and not sure of a return I shut off the True internet in my place few months back and had the router returned. To lessen the hassle of getting hooked back up (ToT account was also closed) should I just get a pocket wifi device, it appears AIS offers something like this? If ToT fiber is available is this the fastest and best option? This is for a condo in Bangkok, cell reception usually very good if it matters.

What do you need the connection for?  Email?  YouTube? HD streaming?

Also, how much are you going to use it?  1 hour a day or all day every day?

The answers to these questions will affect the speed you need as well as data usage (many plans have caps).  These will in turn help work out a suitable package (if any).

Fair amount of YouTube, some larger photo files. Could probably get away with 150GB a month or less I would think.

TPLINK MR 200 router (3G/4G) + True or DTAC sim 1 year unlimited 10Mbps.

TPLINK MR 100 router (3G/4G) + True or DTAC sim 1 year unlimited 10Mbps.

For browsing, email, you tube and netflix streaming it works.

For that usage case, userabcd's router suggestion (or similar)  will work well. Then you can try different SIM card providers to see what works best in your location.  In theory, this will probably be the one with the closest line of sight tower.

Thanks guys I will check those out. I have a spare phone that I used in the past to tether where I was not able to get a normal internet connection. Would using the phone as a wifi hotspot be an option if I can get a sim with unlimited data or something like that?

Yes that's fine if only for 1 device

Reply from a similar recent thread:

For actual unlimited data SIM; DTAC is the cheapest, at 1390 baht for 12 months of Internet usage: https://www.lazada.co.th/products/sim-net-dtac-dtac-10mbps-12-muntookdee-i1154204644-s2700554573.html

Then Truemove H at 1890 baht; https://www.lazada.co.th/products/10mbps-sim-net-true-1-4g-unlimited-i548834295-s995312071.html

Followed by AIS @ 2199 baht: https://www.lazada.co.th/products/ais-8-mbps-10-mbps-24-1-i1609074603-s4399518021.htm

But first get a normal 50 baht SIM and run a speed test to make sure you can get the full 10 Mbps.

If you want to use it for your home Internet connection, you can buy a router:

https://www.lazada.co.th/products/tp-link-300-mbps-wireless-n-4g-lte-router-tl-mr100-3-by-vnix-group-i1360246763-s3435058265.html

or

https://www.lazada.co.th/products/tp-link-archer-mr200-ac750-4g-kerry-3-routersim-lan-4-port-i258027607-s397757091.html

Their Official shop charges more: https://shopee.co.th/shop/52924097/search?shopCollection=7603552

Of course tethering from your LG phone will work too 5G not an issue since you will be capped at 10 Mbps.

Hey guru, do these sim cards come with a number which can be used to call out from?

Also, how would I go about registering the sim card with my passport?

1) Yes it has a tel number, like prepaid sim and one can call out and receive calls.

2) Depends where you buy, the shop will sometimes register the sim with your passport, if not then you go to a dtac office and they will register the sim. In all cases they need your passport to register.

Yes, all have inclusive unlimited 'within network' free calls. DTAC 15 minutes per call. Truemove H, 30 minutes per call. AIS may have all network calls included; 30 minutes per call.

https://www.dtac.co.th/prepaid/registration/

Truemove H at Service Centre or video call to call centre(contact them and request to register).

AIS: AIS: https://www.ais.th/one-2-call/howto_activate/en/index.html

https://www.lazada.co.th/products/ais-speed-8-10-mbps-i2194926969-s7366452166.html New link; as one in earlier post is dead.

Unlimited internet 1 year ( 4 mb/s ) Sim card .

Just go to a true shop to register , that's all . Makes your phone become a wifi hotspot .

Works just fine for me ...

It states clearly 10 Mbps and is just a repost of what has already been posted.

I had to do this for some time in the village (DTac) Problem is if you use a lot

(like an android box) you seem to be always "topping up"

If you are online a lot get a fixed rate through True or similar

It is a one time payment; no topping up necessary for 12 months.
