They are not stupid. They thought of that - because Thailand has no trained crew for submarines, they will use Chinese crews. And to save the cost of repainting the submarines, they will keep the chinese markings on the subs. And to avoid any accidents in shallow waters (as several posters have pointed out ) they will patrol the South China Sea around the Philippines.....

Shallow water catastrophies are possibly on the way, there's Thai offshore Oil installations all over the Gulf of Thailand.......... I've been on several........

Such pointless toys serve as Viagra for the insecure generals (admirals?).

"Hey, mia noi, you should see what's lurking below the surface, if you know what I mean"

Then she says ' Dive dive dive '.  And we all know where that leads to.

Exactly a win win for China all while the Thai people struggle to eat and find an effective vaccine.

There is no use case scenario for these subs unless they will be used as underwater lapdogs for China.

If he doesn’t stop the purchase let’s hope the budget committee can put their heads together and come up with 1 functioning brain so that this nonsense stops.

Superglue should do it. Great idea.

Wonder if the Admiral and Czar have had any thoughts that the Subs in question may have been hardwired, Beijing sitting back and tracking all their subsea movements in the Gulf of Thailand - South China Sea..........

My thoughts exactly and should China and Thailand ever go to war, I bet they are not as advanced as the Chinese subs .

It doesn't matter because they are unusuable in Thai waters anyway. They are also no match for surface vessels either because they can't hide in shallow water and can be easily caught up with bu surface vessels and sunk with depth charges.  Subs need much deeper water so they can hide under the layers of water at different temperatures that makes them harder to find and hit. They are also complete sitting ducks against anti-sub aircrafts.

all irrelevant as they will either sink in the first week or suffer a near miss and end up moored along side the plane less aircraft carrier ...

Thailand go to war with China - not in a million years - the Thais will willingly bend over and smile with delight at the order of mother China ..

I've never really understood the goofballs who complain about Thailand buying tanks, submarines or helicopters. It's a sovereign nation and they can spend money on national defense as any other nation does.  Given the escalating tensions in the region, it makes sense to be reasonably well-armed, and good military equipment is not cheap. Booze-soaked geezers at the beach can laugh about "protect from who? LOL!", but the reality is that all regional powers have a military. For deterrence if nothing else.

Please elaborate which countries are a threat to Thailand?

Seeing as they are buying the subs from China one can only assume that they think the west is a threat.

A threat to what exactly who knows what they are thinking? Doesn't make sense to me either.

Whilst submarines do of course have combat abilities, their primary purpose is for intelligence gathering which in this case would be for China.

I don't necessarily disagree but there is something called timing.

  • The economy is going southwards
  • Unemployment is sky high.
  • One of your biggest revenue streams (tourism) has pratically been reduced to zero.
  • There's a worldwide pandemic and limited vaccines available.
  • There is widespread poverty

If you have billions to 'waste' on submarines then you have billions to look after your people.

and the money could be better spent on real weapons of defence, like fast small well equipped coastal vessels, attack / defensive aeroplanes along with a couple of planes for their useless aircraft carrier, but guess this doesn't really rate as toys-for-the-boys .............

Exactly which shows us who rules the roost in Thailand.

I never thought Germany would go to war with France.....stranger things have happened and a million years is a long time.

I'm waiting for the day when China claims Thailand as part of it's 'territory'....

no need to claim, it's  already virtually under their control .

The U.S. 7th fleet will look after any of Thailand's Naval threats.......

The defense of territories and interests in real every day terms fall well below the radar of interventionist concern to the major players such as the US so long as they do not compromise the benefit derived derived from minor players.

A skirmish between S E A neighbours over economic zone incursions is immaterial to the recipients of diminishing product such as seafood but is  of extreme economic concern to the nationality that is constantly  required to defend it  due to the subversive tactics of the purchaser in obligating trade in  weaponry !

It would only be in a situation of denial to continue such trade due to a challenging aspirant total dominator that could be likely to invoke invasion in the  name of protection.

You would apparently  prefer Thailand or others to  totally concede  to dependency on the 7th Fleet.

Not Russian? Not Chinese? Perhaps an investigation as to true historical "interventions" in South East Asia could give genuine doubt as to the wisdom of that proposal !

I just have to wonder how many doses of an effective covid vaccine could be purchased in place of this sub?

In 2017, Thailand's cabinet approved the purchase of the first submarine for 13.5 billion baht ($434.1 million), with delivery expected in 2023.

13.500.000.000 Baht / 1100 Baht =

12.272.727 Moderna shots.

That calculated with the very high price per shot for the most expensive vaccine.

If you calculated Pfizer's vaccine at $ 20 per shot, Thailand could buy around 21.7 million shots instead of the submarine.

You need to find better language translation software because that is just word salad.

It probably sounded good in Mandarin but in English not so much.

Yeah yeah . Salute your bogus flag of choice  if you feel obligated.
