It's a bit off-topic, but why on earth are you risking your life, riding a (motor)-bike on the ringroad ? :o

That ringroad is so bloody dangerous... :D

LaoPo

Samuijens, would you rather this topic was moved to the Samui forum?

"Why Settle In Samui?, What made you want to live on Samui?"

Cause life's very short and I don't want to spend 40+ years of it busting my ass doing a something I'd rather not do (working vs. relaxing in the sun).

I chose Samui because it's not too bad a place, living costs are cheap relative to my own country. We're arriving next week so the next couple of months are going to tell me if I made a good move or not.

Nice topic suggestion Jens.

To be honest, sometimes some of the things I complain about that are, in fact, part of the reason I have stayed here on Samui in Thailand for a long time now.

Here's a bunch of reasons....

Lack of regimentation.

Not too much enforcement of law, it is a bit flexible.

Not too many laws to worry about.

Friendly cops, compared to Aussie...

Friendly govt. officials (as long as you pay your taxes ;-)

Low taxes (hence low services from govt. stop complaining or pay more tax to support your complaint/s.)

Cheap beer.

Inexpensive food.

Hot weather. (I get sore bones 'n joints in the cold weather)

Plenty of company and companionship to be found easily.

Friendly local people, I have no troubles with the locals at all.

Easy to set up a small business.

Easy to run a small business without getting buried in red tape, licenses and high taxes.

Lots of beaches to swim at.

Great mountains/hills to hang out on or do a bit of the old 4WDing around.

It is in Thailand and that is quite simply a bonus - I love it here.

Sure there are problems, but even though I may complain now and then I don't complain too much and try to see things from both sides of the old fence.

I doubt if I could be happy at "home" now after all this time here in any case.

Cheers all

Great ideas guys, but let's be realistic, TIS and not a luxury Island yet! :o

You mean I can't go around the island on the MonoRail? I can't catch the cable car to KPG? What sort of island is this? :D

What makes me want to live on Samui (not there yet)?

Living up here (where it's 15C now and raining) isn't good for the joints. Too many aches and pains. The fun has made it worth it in the past but not anymore.

I live in Europe and get paid in dollars and, well, enough said.

I miss the heat of Florida but don't want to go back to the States (or the Carib).

After twelve years in northern Europe it's time for a change. Tallinn can be a great place to live but it's all becoming too routine.

Thai food for under $15 a plate (and actually cooked by Thais).

I'll have to revisit this question at the end of the year. Maybe the list will be longer or maybe it will have changed to "Why do I want to leave Samui". I hope it's the former.

Yes I forgot that & BKK Air vision of making it a high end destination, then I suppose I have to go out & buy designer G string swimmers, with my designer hat, driving the Ferrari down to the new Marina to have cocktails with Bill Gates on my yacht.

Maybe that should read, wearing copy shorts, fake designer glasses & hat,on songthaew & row boat.

Here are a couple of crazy kitties for TV users. One of them is the latest craze...shaving your cat for accents like a poodle. knock yurself out.
