Skype Dualphones Set Up

Featured Replies

Considering buying a netgear SPH 200D dualphone for skype, the type where no PC is required, or in my case not turned on 24hrs. I realise the set up is straight forward, one line into the the phone line and another into the router. However, I have one question. My router only has one socket for the LAN which obviously goes into my PC. To use the phone and PC simultaneously is it as simple as obtaining an adapter for the router where I can plug them both in at the same time? In the same token to use the phone in order to make regular landline calls, I take it all I need is an adapter on my phone socket to feed both the phone and router? Apologies for being a complete moron but i cannot find a decent diagram on the net where both are being used at the same time in the type of configuration described.

If your router does NAT, you'll have to have both the PC and the phone plugged into a switch at the same time with different addresses. If you have a range of IP addresses you wont have to consider NAT, just assign each device a different address.

You can't just use an adaptor, you need an ethernet hub or switch (nothing like a light switch it's a complex bit of technology), not expensive and will allow you to connect several devices (usually 8 or so) to your router to share the internet connection :D

To be absolutely sure about what to do, let us have the make and type number of your router.

A trip to pantip or the like is in order :D

A bit of a sideways leap but Skype is now available on Win CE and Win Mobile. I use it on an Asus P535 pda/phone with wifi and it is just brilliant. Both skype and a telephone all in one.

Thanks all for your replies, wasn't quite sure of the ins and outs but kind of figured it wasn't quite as easy as I hoped.

Crossy, I can't give you the exact details of my router at present as I'm working offshore, wont be back home until Saturday. What I can tell you is that I don't think the router would be too extravagant as its the standard one supplied by TT+T for my 256 connection, had it nearly 2 years I suppose. Don't know if that helps.

With the ethernet hub/switch will I be able to use the PC and phone simultaneously?

I take it in order for the phone socket on my wall to be able to feed both the phone and router I would just need the same type of junction as say when you have 2 phones on the same line?

Thanks in advance fellas,

Thanks all for your replies, wasn't quite sure of the ins and outs but kind of figured it wasn't quite as easy as I hoped. It really is a piece of cake and easy to set up.

Don't know if that helps. It can wait, the router will probably do NAT so will work just fine.

With the ethernet hub/switch will I be able to use the PC and phone simultaneously? Yes, and up to 100 odd other computers should you get the urge.

I take it in order for the phone socket on my wall to be able to feed both the phone and router I would just need the same type of junction as say when you have 2 phones on the same line? You will need an ADSL filter (probably came with the router), you can then split the 'phone' output of the filter as required.

Oddly enough I'll be back in LoS on saturday too, currently in Delhi.

Thanks Crossy,

With your permission could I get back to you on this thread or pm you if I hit any problems on the set up, however with the information you have given I think it will be ok. Just stupidly realised that I already have an ADSL splitter, it's what what my phone is plugged into!!! :o

Thanks again.

Thanks Crossy, you were right, it was extremely easy to set up. 600 baht ethernet switch from Tuk Com and a couple of cables to plug in. Just for other people too, i have the netgear sph 200D and very happy with its performance.
