The first phase of human trials of a COVID-19 protein subunit vaccine, jointly developed by the Vaccine Research Centre of Chulalongkorn University and Baiya Phytopharm Company, will be launched in September, said Thailand’s Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul today (Friday).

About 100 volunteers will be used in the trial and they will be given three different dosages, of 10, 50 and 100 micrograms, of the candidate vaccine, to determine which is most suitable, he said, adding that, if everything proceeds according to plan, mass production could start in the third quarter of next year.

Minister Anutin, accompanied by Medical Sciences Department Director-General Dr. Supakit Sirilak, Food and Drug Administration Secretary-General Dr. Paisal Dunkhum and Dr. Nakorn Premsri, director of the National Vaccine Institute, inspected the prototype factory, which produces the vaccine from tobacco leaves.

That a bit of liberty with context. All volunteers for such as a new vaccine are guinea pigs in a sense.

I would think Prayut's statement was simply to assure people that no surreptitious attempts would be  made to inflict an un-trialed vaccine on the unsuspecting  public.

An unnecessary statement other than an attempt to distinguish the Thai regime from North Korea's perhaps?

So while you're waiting, break out the snuff.

Volunteer guinea pigs.... This is something foreigners could actually be 1st in line to!

I assume this will be as transparent as the rest of the governments COVID-19 plans.

I know the military draftees will be force fed this.

I can imagine having a vaccine with a long black hair in it.

Yuck.

to be fair.. it does not specify that the "volunteers" are Thai.   Probably more likely Burmese refugees.....

What % of people die from covid?  Please give overall, by age group, and by comorbidities.  Do you know your chance?  A lot of talk and no numbers.

The Sub Unit may be hard to swallow but the RIGHT color

Perry's cope

Chulalongkorn is the top Thai University and ranks reasonably well international (not the top internationally but far far from the bottom).   The vaccine technology being used is also not new.  I don't doubt that Thailand has enough experience to develop a vaccine locally, I will wait to see how the testing phases turn out... but by then I am hoping I will not be looking for a vaccine shot.

I was referring to the upcoming test of Thai made vaccine.

Interesting technology. Might enable faster development of specific vaccines in the future. It will be years before it is ready for series production on a large scale. But currently does not help Thailand with there shortage of vaccines.
