Naew Na reported on the latest arrests by Thailand's Immigration Bureau at a briefing in Bangkok yesterday presided over by IB chief Pol Lt-Gen Sompong Chingduang.

 

Top billing went to the arrest of a 48 year old American man named only as John.

 

A company took John's company to Civil Court after he allegedly reneged on a 70 million baht payment for software to stop malware and spam.

 

The court found that he was liable and an arrest warrant for fraud in the non-payment of the money was issued by the Dusit criminal court in Bangkok.

 

It was discovered he had put company assets in his own name to avoid payment. 

 

Immigration traced John to a luxury condominium in the Sathorn area where he was arrested going into the building. 

 

He is a twenty year permanent resident of Thailand with no similar previous convictions. He was taken to the Phayathai police station.

 

Naew Na reported that the suspect was one of the top businessmen in American during the dot com era of the 1990s. 

 

He was named by a magazine as one of the top 50 online businessmen.

 

He was involved in online pornography and was given the name of the "Bill Gates of online porn".

 

But after many people harmed in the porn industry took him to court for damages totalling millions of dollars he is thought to have taken the decision to relocate to Thailand.

Too coincidental... A John who is the "Bill Gates of online porn". That's rich. ????

As usual, it's not clear why immigration was involved in a case involving a garden-variety crime committed by a foreigner who was apparently not breaking any immigration laws (and is even a permanent resident, if the reporting is to be believed).

Is it now Fraud ,if you don't pay your bills.

well kind of, I always wondered how long it would take for him to "enrage" a local or have his "successful" bar stolen by the locals, and get "arrested" as he seems way too lucky in this wicked world ????

Seems just like the high end spender Thailand likes, until he started to screw them.

A guy previously tagged with that title in the 1990s was from Seattle. (No, not Bill Gates.) Maybe the guy who marketed the Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee sex tape.

But it would be fraud if one fraudulently removed assets from a company that was being sued/owed money and claimed they had nothing. Of course, because of the lack of reporting standards, nothing is clear

as usual.......where is the rest of the story??

Correct...and mentioned in the Panama Papers.

So let me get this right:

• Random guy arrested for fraud gets a spurious link of being some porn king,
• Copper arrested for murder -with clear video evidence- gets a press conference to highlight his good intentions.

 

So what precisely is the role of the media here?
