Police accused of amulet scam

Jatukarm images seen in digital photographs

An image that looks like a Jatukarm Ramathep amulet appears in a photograph that Jakapan Pornnimit (right), assistant secretary to Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin, took recently with Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva during the opening of the Democrat party's book fair at a supermarket in Bang Phlad district.

An internal investigation has begun into allegations opportunists in the police Crime Suppression Division have been minting Jatukarm Ramathep amulets for personal gain, rather than for the cause they claim.

Pol Col Pongpat Chayaphan, the CSD commander, has ordered all units to follow up a report that officers were pocketing proceeds from amulets they said were being produced for handing out to police working in the deep South.

The order said seven officers were under suspicion and would be called for questioning, a police source said.

In the order, Pol Gen Pongpat cited a report from a member of the public about the production of the Sethi Thaweekoon series of the talisman.

He said an investigation was needed because the matter involved a god that many people believe in, and to protect the CSD's efforts to boost its credibility.

Anyone found guilty would be duly punished. A fact-finding committee may be set up to ensure fairness, the source said.

The investigations coincide with increasing talk about an image looking like the Jatukarm Ramathep amulet appearing on digital cameras.

Many photo shops interviewed by the Bangkok Post said they had received queries about it. A photo shop owner attributed the occurrence to coincidence, either through a fine drop of water falling on the camera lens, or maybe it was the saliva of the camera operator viewing the images while talking.

But a number of sceptics have been convinced the amulet holds power.

Nondhanada Schulz, PR manager of a cable television company, believed the images she saw on a photo of herself were proof of the amulet's sacredness.

''I was celebrating my birthday with friends and my family when I took the photos. When I looked at them on my digital camera the next day, I was shocked when I saw an image of the Jatukarm amulet on my forehead. I got goose bumps. My friends were also frightened,'' she said.

Before this experience, she had paid little attention to the spread of the amulet's popularity.

She used to think that it was a matter of individual belief, but now she planned to buy one herself.

Pavinee Amartthas, director of Huay Kwang district office, said some images bearing the Jatukarm amulets appeared on her digital camera when she posed for a photograph with friends during her visit to Turkey last month.

''It still makes my hair stand on end,'' she said.

''I always used to make fun of my friends whenever I saw them wearing the amulets.

''I once jokingly asked them whether I could borrow their amulets to draw my eyebrows. Now, I dare not crack such a joke,'' she added.

Jakapan Pornnimit, assistant secretary to Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin, said a similar image appeared on a picture he had taken of him and Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva during the opening of the party's book fair at a supermarket in Bang Phlad on May 19.

''I asked to take a photo with him and then had my wife take one as well. We looked at the picture on our camera and found some Jatukarm images there. The party leader also asked why there were so many this time,'' said Mr Jakapan.

He said a similar image appeared on a picture taken by digital camera at a birthday party of former party-list MP Potipong Lamsam on April 15.

This Jatukarm craze is just sheer rubbish! Detailed studies of both Hinduism and Buddhism shows that such a deity does not exists. In fact in recent articles in the Nation and Bangkok Posts, it was mentioned that as a result of some misinformed and stupid locals in the past, they corroded the names of two patrons of the relic temple and came up with this name. Even the supreme patriach has voiced dissapproval of this Jatukarm stuff. Furthermore, it has been appearing in articles in India, that the imaging of the deity coincides with another deity in the Southern part of kerala but the name and the significance is totally non-correlating.

So far, quiet a number of people wearing these amulets have died in accidents, etc contrary to the so called powers of the amulet.

For Gods sake, stop promoting it and even asked your loved ones to stay away from such things that are blasphemous to both buddhism and also hinduism.

Interesting though is that now reservations for a special edition are offered. This edition is supposed to contain hair and nail clippings from H.M. the King, and is "rented" out for 100 000 Baht.

Sorry, but why do you think that this is without permission?

The palace itself has issued since long before this reign their own amulets, given to loyal servants. I have been shown once a few issued by the palace under Rama VI and they were astonishingly beautiful amulets. Also now members of the armed forces are given special palace issue amulets as special rewards for services.

And when several Thai friends of mine told me about the special issue Jatukham's i have no reason to doubt them. Their main topic of conversation nowadays is the different Jatukhams.

The palace is highly involved in religious affairs.
