Thai public health officials have been trying to track down 10 people from five different provinces who may have been exposed to COVID-19 during their visits to Muang Mai market in Chiang Mai, where 265 people, mostly traders and workers, have been found to be infected.

The Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) Assistant Spokesperson Dr. Apisamai Srirangsan said, today (Monday) that the Muang Mai and Sor Tor Gao market clusters, in which 91 people are infected so far, continue to spread, resulting in six additional clusters affecting another 106 people to date.

As the disease spreads among the families of the infected from the two wet markets, health officials have been trying to find the whereabouts of ten traders from Bangkok, Lampang, Pathum Thani, Kanchanaburi and Rayong to alert them of their risk and the possibility that they may unknowingly spread the disease to their families and other people.

my older tutukk driver was talking about that two days ago; he said the market is shut down. that could impact many restaurants and smaller markets since Muang Mai is the major supply/distribution hub

Just shows you how it can spread inter-provincially in a heartbeat.

Wet/fresh markets around Thailand are going to remain the main infection areas at the moment.

Although masks are worn the close proximity of people and general lack of cleanliness is going to allow the spread to continue.

Wet markets in Chiang Mai and every other location will continue to spread diseases of all kinds until and unless officials require proper sanitation and disinfection of all food contact surfaces.  Maintenance of facilities to prevent infestation of flies, rodents and insects should become a secondary requirement to the proper washing and sanitizing of food containers and food display areas.

OBTW, when was the last time you saw a hand washing sink at a stall at a wet market?

A sense of laxity has descended on CM so outbreaks like this are inevitable. The Tesco minimall in Ruamchok has had at least 2 hotspot outbreaks in recent months and yet when I was there last week they did not even have a working thermoscanner at the entrance and no one supervising. With a new governor installed a few days ago it will be interesting to see how the very slow vaccination programme progresses, how the air pollution crisis unfolds and if there is a viable tourism promotion programme. I cant say I have much confidence in the future.
