At which point in the match, I'm taking my balls home.

I had a friend who thought he was drugged. Does that count? It was his first time here and he was putting away the Singhas like they were water. I warned him that he wasn't drinking Budweiser but he said he could handle it. He's a BIG guy and it was difficult for me and the bellboy to get him to his room. The next day he told me that he thought someone had drugged him.

An american travelling outside the US for the first time and drinking a proper beer (instead of that weak stuff which passes for beer in the states) doesn't count......

Bendix - are trying to lose some forum popularity contest? I ask because you are certainly beginning to tick off a lot of people!

Not that it matters at all, but please explain why.

I and many others have heard these stories about people being drugged and having their stuff stolen for years and years. And yet - and yet - these stories ALWAYS, without exception, have always happened to someone else, never the teller of the story. This thread is a perfect example of that. Four or five secondhand retellings by people whose friends it happened to, yet never any firsthand accounts. Mikevigoman is now relating stories about two ladyboys raping a guy after drugging him.

Put simply, I just don't believe it happens. I strongly suspect it's another Bangkok urban myth, propagated by people with either too much imagination or - perhaps more accurately - it is a story latched onto by a 'victim' who might have had one put over them by a girl or ladyboy in a compromising situation, but they are too embarassed to tell the truth and thus use the 'drugged' myth as a crutch.

Frank and tony are here in 2 weeks, want to meet up and call them ( and me ) liars to our face ? :o

Here's a simple challenge. Has anyone on this board ever personally been drugged and had all their goods taken from them?

OK I’ll put my hand up as having been slipped a Mickey Finn. It's only happened once in my life.

It happened at a street food stall in soi2 Patpong 20 years ago. I stopped off for a plate of fried rice and a small bottle of Klosters. It was my first and only drink for the day and the bottle arrived open. Luckily I had other plans elsewhere for the evening and had no intention of staying on for a drinking session.

I finished the meal plus beer and moved on. By the time I walked across the road to a waiting tuktuk my eyesight was blurred and I was feeling dizzy. I headed straight to a hospital. The hospital staff suggested I just go back to my hotel and sleep off the effects as they had no way of telling what had been given to me.

I did as recommended and fortunately wasn’t followed or robbed. It took 3 or more days for my eyesight to return to normal.

I’ve often wondered what the outcome would’ve been if I’d continued to the bars in Patpong.

hmm,

taxi touts 1)

Sydney airport October last year. Walking towards the taxi rank which had a long queue, uniformed cabbies appoached wanting to know if I wanted a ride with them. Avoiding the airport sucharge no doubt.

taxi touts 2)

walk out of any nightclub in london after the tube shuts down at 11pm. The first thing you'll hear is mini cab...mini cab. Will take you anywhere for 30 quid...2100 baht!

2100 Baht is cheap if you happen to be going home to Brighton. :o

I got in at BKK airport on Monday. 2 touts had a crack, if you reply with 'me not hungry' they go away pretty quick.

They tried to stiff me on the Taxi fare by charging 400 baht plus tolls plus 50 baht airport charge. Reminded the taxi driver that it's law to put the meter on and he put it on right away.

There were no touts around the money exchange area either. It all went quite smoothly.

Ummm, with all due respect you havent called my bluff. The whole thread of this discussion, dear fellow, was to muse on the theory that whenever one hears of these stories, it is always that they happened to a friend, or a colleague, or someone else. Which is precisely what you've told us.

Hence my question, has it happened to you? I was looking for direct stories, not hearsay.

However, our esteemed colleague Farma has told us it happened to him 20 years ago. Mea Culpa. I'm now prepared to accept it happens, but nowhere near as frequently as the oft-repeated urban legends suggest.

As for meeting your friends. Well, I'm touched by the invitation, but I think I'm washing my hair that night. No disrespect to Uncle Tony and Cousin Pete, but I can't think anything worse than meeting chaps who accept offers of drugs from ladyboys. Who knows, I may end up in the same boat :o

If you have never made a mistake in Thailand or been victim of a con you are possibly the only one, congratulations ! there is a difference of accepting and being spiked,You sound like you would make a great quardian /guide but i consider the areas you frequent may offer no form of adventure spirit, and in my opinion some people see a mistake made as a reason to be aware and not a reason to not go somewhere!,so put that in your pie and smoke it ! :lol:ps are you a lady ? i have only heard the " not out tonight because im washing my hair " excuse from women ! ,have i been wrong ( again ) all along assuming you are the pipe smoking fellow in the pic ? ( hence the pipe comment ! :o

I have to admit, Bendix does sound a bit prudish at times on this issue. Could he possibly be what we Americans refer to as an "armchair quarterback." aw, come on Bendix, fess up, never even popped in to a naughty place?

Good question. Sometimes I think the same too.

The truth is I live in Sukhumvit 11. I'm in the epicentre of it. I chose to live here when I arrived because I did - at the time - feel a prurient curiousity about the whole thing. Who doesnt? It's like living in a Bertold Brecht play.

But the fascination wore off quickly and it soon became boring. Sometimes I head out and prop up a bar and have a chat - usually in some of the fleshier places.

But these days I much prefer the company of my lovely wife on quiet nights in at home. I think I'm getting old. Curiously, I'm enjoying the process.

One more thing.

I've this afternoon received a PM from another respected TVer who tells me he was similarly drugged recently.

Perhaps it's more common than my cynicism will allow me to see.

I hereby accept that the whole premise of my argument could be wrong, and if someone will fetch me my sword, I shall happily fall on it.

But only after I've finished wiping the srambled off my face.

Mea culpa again.

I'll leave it to Bendix to discuss his go go dancing and extremely long wanger but back on track, a mate of mine had his drink spiked one night here in Bangkok and woke up minus some cash but he insists that his bottom was intact.

Unfortunately yet another hearsay story and I have yet to experience this phenomenan myself but believe it to be plausible if not exactly a common occurance.

Its not easy to admit defeat, and after our difference of opinions here and there i dont hold a grudge, and i promise i was telling the truth about the 2 guys mentioned,It is a bit of a pub " yea it happened to my mate" etc but i dont have any doubts that it is fairly regular occurance at the areas we all love or hate, and as long as we are on guard we will be ok ! ,all the best

It's touching to see you all holding hands and singing kumbaya. But, this is a serious topic. It would be nice to cut through the b.s. and see if there really is a problem we need to be aware of. I stopped in for a hamburger at Big Mango at 5PM last week, and as a result of all this scare-mongering, nervously drained my beer each time before hitting the head. I've previously never given a second thought to this.

I also am a family man, but occasionally do go out. I think we should keep this thread open and see if we can get more stories (valid ones).

Exactly, and that is the reason i posted the 2 cases i know first hand that happened and i was originally shot down in flames ,. we must all be aware and make our friends aware, not try to be smartasses and tell them to keep away !

Bendix, I take my hat off to you.

Not many people on this forum admit that they "may" be wrong.

"Scaremongering". You hit the nail on the head.

There's no shame in being wrong. Getting things wrong is the only way to truly find what's right. I'm delighted to say I'm wrong more times than I'm right.
