The Ministry of Cults and Religion has banned all Kathen Festival processions, street parades and performances outside of pagodas but “Trichivor” offerings are still allowed as is customary.

Minister Chhit Sokhon advised Buddhists to be careful to create better conditions for monks to celebrate Kathen in accordance with the Buddhist tradition by strictly implementing Health Ministry protection measures. The Kathen Festival is from October 22 to November 19.

The guidelines are aimed at eradicating and preventing the spread of Covid-19 throughout the country, especially the Delta variant, which has a high rate of rapid transmission. The ban referred to the need to protect the lives and health of the people as the Kingdom moves toward a full re-opening of the country.
